Yari no gonza - The tragic story of Gonza, a handsome ladies man, and one of the Matsue clan's most talented lancers.
Set in the Tokagawa Period, a time in which appearences are very important. Osai, the wife of Lord Matsue, offers her daughter's hand in marriage to Gonza, her husband's favorite retainer. Even though he is already engaged to another, Gonza readily accepts, seeing an opportunity to enhance his position. Infuriated by this betrayal, the brother of Gonza's ex-fiancee takes his revenge by framing Gonza and Osai for adultery.
The innocent pair are then chased through the countryside by Osai's husband, who is intent on restoring his lost honor. An extremely realistic and pictorially beautiful film. Based on a play in the Bunraku tradition, written by Monzaemon Chikamatsu in 1717.
