Ningyo-Tei Ibun Muhogai no Suronin -
(Strange Tale of Mermaid Inn: Lowly Ronin on Lawless Streets)
Itβs the Meiji era boomtown of Yokohama, and as always, the
story centers around a saloon called "The Mermaid" (Ningyotei), whose main
attraction is a nightly show of scantily-clad women swimming in a huge glass
bowl. Meanwhile two residents of the inn upstairs fight corruption and evil as
Japan goes through major changes in order to deal with the world at
large.
Modern times have changed Japan into a place where money is
all that matters, and people are willing to commit crimes that would have been
unthinkable in the past. Not only that, but Mr. Chidori's past may come back
and haunt him when his best friend and mentor investigates a counterfeiting
conspiracy that just may blow his cover.
Surrounded by a number of regulars, this is an exciting series
with many twists and turns. The stories range from revenge to stray deserters
who escaped the civil war in the north. As always there is drama, the occasional
coach robbery, and some funny situations that lighten up the story. All in all
this is a true Western set in Japan, but in a very Japanese way, and since it is
the dawn of western relations you see a lot of Japanese clothed western style
but still having the Samurai style hair-do.
