The Zatoichi television series is just as good as the film series that preceded it. In fact many may prefer the television series.
Since each episode is reduced to 45 minutes, you get to the climatic fight a lot sooner, and since the plot has to be simplified to accommodate less characters, the films are easier to follow.

Episode 3. THE PALANQUIN WARS OF TENPO PERIOD
Ichi takes the side of a small palanquin company suffering attacks from a larger outfit looking to monopolize the market. Lurking in the shadows is the large company’s bodyguard, a master swordsman who is looking forward to cutting down the blind man and gaining fame. Ichi will have to come up with some new tactics in order to survive against such a strong opponent.
Episode 4. FIREFLY
While on a ferry ride to deliver a gift to a blind girl from her prostitute sister, Ichi meets a doctor who wants to perform surgery to possibly restore the blind man’s vision. Although he turned down the invitation, Ichi decides to bring the girl to that doctor’s office and offers to pay all the medical costs incurred. Will the surgery be successful and can she avoid becoming the mistress of a local yakuza boss who is willing to pay 25 gold coins to take her virginity?
