learning about SE3R and is a comprehensive source of reference concerning the
many applications of SE3R.

Overview
SE3R is a
method that enables you to capture and to analyse rapidly and comprehensively
the fine-grain detail in any form of written or spoken text. It is an
invaluable information processing tool which enhances the practice of all text
professionals: police officers, investigators in the public and private
sectors, lawyers, legal staff and others working in criminal, civil, and
tribunal systems, those who process claims and applications, counsellors and
psychotherapists, researchers and academics. There are many more occupations
that involve working professionally with text.
The text
professional must have a sound grasp and recall of the fine-grain detail
contained within documents - such as statements – and in verbal
exchanges – typically interviews – conducted face-to-face or on the
telephone, or recorded electronically. It is essential to know what really was
disclosed, what was disclosed in a vague or odd manner, or not disclosed at
all!
SE3R has a
unique format and techniques. These help you unconsciously to register and to
store in memory much more detail than you are able to gather by close reading,
intent listening, or conventional note taking. SE3R
instantly reveals critical material and the whole range of oddity that can
occur in text. You are immediately able to do something about it: identifying
and prioritising areas for probing and further investigation; planning and
preparing for a subsequent interview; keeping track of disclosures and
behaviour in the interview.
Contents
SE3R: A Resource Book enables you to learn the method quickly and to
apply it to different kinds of text.
Chapter 1
introduces you to SE3R. It explains the language and psychological
problems facing those making disclosures and those trying to make sense of
them: problems that SE3R overcomes.
Chapter 2 explains
how to apply SE3R to a document: the simplest and most basic application
of SE3R. Straightforward explanation, numerous examples and extensive
illustrations help you to learn SE3R quickly.
Chapter 3 is
linked to the CD accompanying this book. It explains how to apply SE3R
to an electronic recording or a transcript of a recording. You are introduced
to BASELINES(a tool for systematically monitoring changes in
a person's behaviour) and ASSESS+ (a tool for assessing the content of
disclosed detail and the manner in which the individual discloses detail).
Chapter 4 is also
linked to the CD. You learn how to apply SE3R in any type of interview
using Conversation Management and productive questions in combination
with illustrator representations and enhanced drawing (tools for
accessing and capturing non-verbal disclosure), BASELINES and ASSESS+.
Chapter 5
describes how to construct a composite SE3R from two or more individual SE3Rs.
A composite SE3R reveals consistency and mismatch within different
versions of 'what happened' and within different descriptions. You are able to
identify immediately the origin of a particular detail.
Chapter 6
introduces you to StoryBoard: computerised SE3R for the tablet
PC.
Annex Aprovides statements with
illustrative examples of SE3R. Annexes B to E give
illustrations of composite SE3Rs – created using SE3R sheets and SE3R
grids produced by hand and on the PC.
