"Wolperdingers" Today's
scientists are not the first to create genetically modified (and
sometimes scary) living things. Artists have done this for a long time,
and being one of those artists, I am giving it a whirl--and a fun spin
it is.
I
combine papers, lace, buttons, wax, paint, and old botanical drawings
to form humorous images--opposites of the very serious genetic
mixed-species that are altering our basic food sources today. My
animals fit in the category of German "Wolperdingers," those creatures
seen only while walking home from the brew pub late at night. They are
relatives of the Jackalope, a secretive animal spotted on occasion in
the deserts of our western states and who spreads chuckles across the
land via tourist postcards." Rosemary Luckett
