Hey- here's a funny story. I listed this pin a few days back, and then received a phone call from my sister in Florida- "For someone who goes weak in the knees over men in kilts, you sure don't know your Scottish history do you?" In my very afraid voice I asked "hmmm why- are you saying that"?!? Well . . . I had listed the "thistle" design as "pineapples" - True- Men in kilts, that's all I know - and Thank God for sisters! That being said, I have had a couple of days to do more research and THIS is what I have come up with. Not claiming to be an expert, some of this could be wrong- and please let me know, I LOVE learning new things about antiques- really, you will not offend. This wonderful sash/kilt pin measures 2.5" by 1" deep. There is a crown ? (picture #7) that was hand enscribed at the very side end of the clasp hinge, and then opposite is "z/u" (sorry- too faint to photograph).
The Condition: Mint. The deep amber stone in the center is very thick, round and faceted. Possibly cairngorm (?) which is 1" in diameter alone and almost 1/2" deep! The stone is perfect, (a few delicate bubbles) like it was just cut, with no chips, nicks, scratches...... I have read these quartz type gems are found only in the Cairngorm Mts. of the bonnie Scottish highlands. OR it could be glass- I don't know. It is held in place with the most incredible setting I have ever seen, I think it would be safe to say "thistle" (ha) which is then encircled with the band of silver with embossed thistles all around in amazing detail. The clasp is a "c"- dating to the Victorian era. Although there is no sterling hallmark, I have been told the crown usually indicates sterling- (thus the slight tarnishing). This is really a stunning AND one of kind well made piece of jewelry. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me prior to auctions end.
