This is a Bamana mask. The Bamana (or Bambara) people live in Mali. They have quite a lot of masks each type fitted for a specific age group. In Bamana, age-group initiating passed through several stages and each individual would belong to successive societies as he grew and learnt from the tribe.
This is Bamana mask is of the type kore. The kore society is regarded as the master of rain and thunder and it is the highest of the initiation groups. Graduation into the kore society involves teenagers undergoing a symbolic death and rebirth. Initiation is done every seven years and can be intensive, involving masks such as this which are supposed to teach courage, knowledge and work.
This kore mask is of a hyena. Other animals depicted include antelopes, monkeys, horses, and lions. The stylistic elements of kore masks are similar and include large eyes and protruding jaws.
