This is a vintage wood carving, large and very heavy, it has no structural cracks but it's slightly warped probably due to age, see pictures for visual details. It was likely carved by a folk artist in the naive or folk style of Eastern Europe and depicts a religious theme: the Holy Family. This piece is unsigned and was purchased in the village of Ieud, Romania. The upper half of the bas-relief illustrates God the father with angels on either side of Him sitting above the clouds. Below the clouds, in the lower half there is the Holy Family: Mary, Joseph and child Jesus in the middle holding the hands of his earthly parents. Such carvings are typically displayed in village churches along with wood painted icons but these carvings are rarer. This large bas-relief in its primitiveness is quite stunning and powerful and when hanged on a wall, it grabs everyone’s attention. |
