DESIGN
Taller and wider than the Treo but considerably slimmer, the 5.8-ounce hw6500 Mobile Messenger easily slips into a pocket. The device's keys are round and small, but they're hard enough and raised with decent enough feedback for fairly rapid typing. The five-way navigation joystick is handy for scrolling through Web pages or your inbox, and there's a dedicated sliding volume control and camera launch/shutter button on the left spine. The removable battery is a definite plus.
FEATURES
The hw6500's quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio gives you voice and data access in almost any country, and there's Bluetooth for pairing a wireless headset or swapping files or syncing wirelessly with your PC. There's no Wi-Fi onboard, but you can always add that via the SD Card slot, which is why there's a convenient second Mini SD card slot for extra memory. The most unique feature is the integrated high-sensitivity GPS receiver, a first for smart phones. As of press time, HP was negotiating with a software vendor for possibly including GPS software so users wouldn't have to make an extra investment, which would make this all-in-one device that much more attractive to users that spend a lot of time behind the wheel. Last but not least is a 1.3-megpapixel camera, which is the highest resolution you'll find on a smart phone. (A camera-less version will be available for businesses concerned about security.)
E-MAIL
In our tests, we used the basic e-mail application included withing Pocket Outlook and a POP-3 account. Setup took five steps and two minutes, thanks to the relatively intuitive wizard. We appreciated the option of having the Messenger check for new e-mail as frequently as every 60 seconds. Hence the value of any additional carrier-provided applications that automatically push out new e-mail. HP is working with Cingular to offer it's Xpress Mail application out of the box, as well as Goodlink software for those businesses that use the company's servers.
PERFORMANCE
The Messenger runs on Cingular's EDGE network, which is widely available in the U.S. When checking e-mail and viewing Web pages, speeds were slightly slower than other EDGE smart phones we recently tested (averaging anywhere between 50 and 60 Kbps) but most Web pages began loading within ten seconds. Nevertheless, the Mobile Messenger is a better option for e-mail than heavy surfing.
