Design: These galloping horses are from a selection of paintings by the famous Chinese painter Xu Beihong(1895-1953). Xu Beihong, born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, began to learn painting from his father when he was nine. At about 13, he was already making a living by selling his pictures. He became a teacher at Beijing University' s Institute of Painting in 1917 and went to France in 1919 to study painting. Xu was a painter of great attainment in sketches and portraits, good at capturing the character and mood of the subjects by realistic methods. He depicted mainly historical stories in his early works, but switched to realistic subjects later. His subjects also included flowers and birds, landscapes and animals, all painted in a concise and vigorous style. He was specially skilled in painting horses in a bold and unrestrained style. In the pictures on the stamp we can see his horses coming to life. After the founding of New China, Xu Beihong became president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and chairman of the Union of Chinese Artists. After his death on September 23, 1953, the Chinese government built the Xu Beihong Memorial Hall in memory of his contributions to art.
This set of souvenir sheet depicts six galloping horses selected from paintings by Xu Beihong. This painting was created in 1942, 95 cm. long, 181 cm. wide. Around the design is flanked by silver gray laciness, which enhances Chinese painting ' s style and makes the design elegant.
