This coin, the tenth in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, honors President John Tyler. Born in 1790 to a prominent Virginia planter family, John Tyler was a lawyer by training. He served as a Virginia state delegate and governor, U.S. Senator and Vice President for one month under President William Henry Harrison.

He was the first Vice President of the United States to take the presidential oath upon the death of a sitting President. At that time, the U.S. Constitution did not specify several issues related to succession, and his entire presidency was deemed questionable on the scope of his presidential powers, which earned him the nickname “His Accidency.” Many believed he should have been recognized as an acting President with limited powers, but Tyler set an important precedent by assuming all the duties and powers of an elected President.

Tyler's most notable achievement was the annexation of Texas in 1845. He served as the 23rd Governor of Virginia before he became the 10th President of the United States. 

 

The John Tyler Presidential $1 Coin design displays large, dramatic artwork, as well as edge-incused inscriptions of the year, E PLURIBUS UNUM and the mint mark. It features a likeness of John Tyler on the obverse along with the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST, 10th PRESIDENT and 1841-1845. The reverse design is a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty.
