rocker - I've never been to NYC, but you have my sympathy. I hope that your recovery and your city's is swift and complete!

Snowdayz - I've read threads here that are argumentative but witty, debatable, taunting and more. But I also see the respect that the people at the RT have for each other. You remark was nothing less than hateful and mean-spirited - GO AWAY

Someone goes to the site of a huge tragedy to see death and destruction up close so it can be more "real" for them and all the little mother hens crowd around clucking how sorry they are for that person, my heart is broken for those who were there and those who died, not this.

nycrocker,

Please see my post above to Hepburn. It applies to you as well.

Also, my sympathies to you and jamesoblivion...I cannot imagine the devastation you must have felt upon actually seeing the destruction.

Sorry Pat. You were posting while I was. Snowydayz is going from thread to thread, insulting people. Check out what she said in hopelesssinners thread, too. I will cease, but only in respect to Rocker and what this thread is about.

Kraft - yes it is STILL on fire beneath. It is still smoking and it is pretty strong. Over a month now and it is still burning. Hard to believe, isn't it?

Spaz my bud, it's okay. If "freak" means that I am a rock musician, or lesbian, or bi-gendered, or that I looked at the tragedy site up close, or that I am a compassionate person, um, okay, I am a freak. And quite proud of it.

Here's a smile for ya Hep - and everyone.

my best friend lives in the city. his wife and he went to ground zero. he told me every American should see it in person to understand it. I agree having been to the towers. I do not think most Americans understand it. television does it no justice.

Jannie,

Thanks for letting us NYers who no longer live in state know what it's like.

I felt like my heart was ripped out when I saw the devastation on TV. I've been getting updates from friends who are up close and personal at the site. But, they say words can not begin to describe it and I believe them.

In a way, I'm glad the Belt was backed up on August 25th when we were coming over the Verrazano Bridge. My oldest (6) got to see the skyscrapers up close for the first time, while stuck in traffic on the BQE.

I don't look forward to making the trip in the Spring. I can't imagine the skyline looking like it did when I was a small child. I really don't remember what it looked like before the towers were built.

I shudder at those that don't shudder at all Wasn't that your sig line before Snowydayz? Guess you stopped shuddering.

The people that are left are always the ones that have the hardest time. Unless you've forgotten the ones who died have gone to God. They are at peace . It is those of us left here that are troubled.

NYCROCKER, I look at my city and realize that had that happened here our entire downtown would be gone. I can't imagine the devastation and I am so sorry that you all have this massive scar on your city. I feel for you all.

I'm proud to be one of the little mother hens in this world! I know how much you love the city and I'm sorry for your loss. Seeing the site had to be tough... I know. As much as it hurt you to see it I'm sure it's an important step in your healing. Take care.

I truly understand your need and those of any who call NYC home. I have "made" myself watch some shows on TV that I would not normally...the Third Watch Special "In their own Words and some of the newscasts..Not to be morbid but to reinforce that these were real people, brave caring and willing to give their all and those that are left behind and how they are dealing with their losses. I don't want for one minute to forget the human tragedy, the statistics make it too easy to see it as a "happening" instead of an earth shattering horrific deed.

Shoshana and others know that is why we have the Holocaust Museum - so no one forgets and the words "Never Again"

snowydayz, why do people travel, when you can see the sights on TV? To each his own, but I can understand wanting to see what these scumbags did, not only to New Yorkers, but to the U.S. I'm sure that's a sight rocker will NEVER forget, but I bet she's not sorry she went. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for sharing. The only thing that resonates with these personal testimonies of what to me are now only images on TV and in print of our present national tragedy would be my one visit to the Gettysburg battleground. Standing on it on an early foggy morning and imagining the waves of troops being cut down by the thousands by fellow Americans, even 130 years later, was almost physically painful.

I can hardly imagine visiting the shock and horror of the scene in NYC, and its implications, so soon now after it took place.

And {{{{{HUGS}}}}} to all of you.

Brein, very good point. Denial, closure, acceptance, etc, there are so many different stages of grief people go through when they experience a loss. I was in denial about it for too long. I wasn't "feeling" anything. I was numb. Then I started having some nightmares. I knew I needed to go downtown for some kind of "closure". And I am nowhere near the "acceptance" part. I guess I just needed to cry and get it out. Who knows, I may need to cry some more? I may need to go down there again? I don't know. I will see. I will do what I need to do to go through this, we will all find our own ways to go through it. I'm very glad you are all here and that we are sharing our feelings. Thank God MOST people still have feelings.

Well, I'll admit it. I did feel slightly voyeuristic going down there. I wasn't there to haul junk, I was there to look. But you know what? It's my 'hood. I actually know a man who was killed there. Everyone I know knows someone who knows someone who knows someone; the six degree of separation thing. Everyone was affected and everyone continues to be affected. It's the kind of thing that this happened within a few miles from where I live so how could I or anyone not go and look? It's a mass grave. That's what's particularly upsetting and sobering. I couldn't get closer than two blocks and the cops where trying to get people moving along.

Asbestos... Spaz, it can't be good. I have a bad feeling a lot of the good guys are going to be having some troubles in the coming years from this.

{{{{{Mybid!!!}}}}} Big hugs!
{{{{{Zilvy}}}}} Excellent point about the museum!
{{{{{Kraft}}}}} Absolutely right, I don't regret going one bit. I may go again.

I felt like what Brein said about going to see it to fully understand. There is a feeling you get there I cannot describe in words. But I can also totally understand those who DON'T want to go, if they feel afraid or think it is not good for them for their own reasons. To each his/her own. We all heal in our own ways. And we WILL heal.

This mother hen is clucking herself to bed. Youre in good company, Rocker. The folks here know where youre coming from, and its sobering for all of us...rather, most of us. I have no idea what you saw, you and James or others who have SEEN it. But I can imagine. Yes, it is a mass grave, and the people still under there should never ever be forgotten.

'Night.
