bunni - That's cute! A cow, lol.

I had a long haired Rott that thought the same thing. The kids loved to pet him because his fur was so soft. He sat in front of the closed door just waiting for the bell to ring. I had to put the other three dogs in the yard because they would bark and scare the kids. My fuzzy bear was just a big hunk of fluff (120 lbs)with the sweetest desposition you can imagine.

Every year after that I cried for 2 or 3 days before Halloween, felt sick, begged not to go through this ordeal and not to teach my daughter these pagan traditions.

terri,

If you're going to object to everything that has a whiff of paganism to it, I'm afraid you're going to have to disassociate yourself from many Christian traditions. Many Christian rites and holidays have their origins in paganism.

For example, is it mere coincidence that Easter is celebrated about the same time as the spring equinox? That the figure of the risen Christ bears a strong resemblance to pagan fertility gods rising after the dead of winter? Or that some of the saints are Christianized revisions of pagan gods? (Saint Brigid comes to mind)

I'm not trying to be a jerk. This is all pretty standard stuff. It goes back to what jamesoblivion was saying about "God yes, gods no." In an effort to mainstream pagans to the new Christianity, church leaders modified some of the old pagan symbols and traditions and worked them into Christianity so that the pagans would be more accepting of the new faith.

Personally, Halloween is not a favorite holiday of mine. It is bad enough that people put on facades every day of the year, but some just seem to go overboard on this holiday.

My sweetie loves to watch every horror movie ever made (I decline). But who is the one with the light on everynight? Not me.

Halloween does have its dark side and all kidding, goshing and poking in the ribs just doesn't cut it for me.

It depicts the dark, mean side of humanity.

And especially a real hoot for me--Martha Stewart loves Halloween and goes on ad nauseum about how to decorate and celebrate.
Just a good girl that tries to be bad. A friggin good thing and just "beauuutiiiifuul".

Ohh oh, my favorite was when Martha had this sappy Halloween outfit on with fake teeth and tried to talk. My goodness gracious, the woman was slobbering!!!! I loved it!

Sure you're not confusing Halloween with Christmas shopping?

Oops Spaz, was thinking of the last church rumage sale attended. Guard up and watch out for those little old ladies and their canes! They are a fearsome force.

It depicts the dark, mean side of humanity....well, I suppose it's all in how you see it...Sure, some folks take it to extremes and almost every teen sees it as a perfect night to target every house that they want...but all that aside, I see princesses, cops, pumpkins, cowboys, indians, Buzz Lightyears, Woodies, ninjas, firemen, ghosts, knights, Power Rangers, and host of others being lead around the neighborhood by groups of parents talking, waving and being friendly. I see "big" brothers & sisters asking for extra candy for their little baby brother/sister who's "too little to trick or treat"....I see parents taking the time to be with their kids....I hear parents yelling up the driveway "remember to say thank you"....I see shy kids and outgoing kids...I hear the sound of crunching leaves as the parade of kiddies come across the lawn...I hear laughter and the squeal of the child who just got TWO of his/her favorite candy...I know about the pagan traditions and the lure of the devil, but I choose to make this day just a day of dressing up, eating way too much candy and having tons of fun!

I just love's Halloween and I never give any thought to what it stands for, or what it means.

Heck, it's just fun! and without it, what would we do between the Jerry Lewis Telethon on Labor Day, and stuffin' ourselves with Bird and Sweet Potato Surprise on Thanksgiving?

Nuthin' I tell ya, nuthin'!

Round here, we have the Great Punkin' Patches, the Corn Mazes (like Mazilla), the hay rides, and all that fun stuff...

AND ANOTHER THING...

When else would we watch the "Wizard Of Oz"???

Come on Terri, you know I luvs ya, and I am a Christian too, but Hallow Weenie is just like having a party, and we all knows that Poc don't never pass up a party...HA!

Spaz, I am aware of that. Just for the record, I know of no saints other than the ones who work in the nursery with the 2-4 year old crowd.

I never give any thought to what it stands for

Why not Poco? You certainly don't have to but I don't do many things without thinking about why I do them I guess.

If I go to a party, I must know if it's a birthday party? or a Christmas party? or a wedding party? or a wilderness exploration party? or a political party (and it Republican of Democrat)?

I just had the best Halloween ever on Friday! My school has the Fall Carnaval, and it was GREAT!

The SPED teacher, another 3rd grade teacher, and myself got together (hell, we practically live together anyway, figured we could play together too) and did two activities. One was a drawing for pumpkins. The other was the coolest thing.

We did a 'Candy Grab'. Picture a ten foot card board circle about 4 feet tall filled half way with shreaded paper....loaded with candy....and kids thrown in to find the candy.

I spent an hour 'in the box' and had more fun than the kids. We had the best attraction in the whole school.

My kids were beside themselves when they saw me in my clown outfit!

I can't begin to count the hours it took to get that whole booth togther, but it was sure worth it! Can't wait for next year!!

Oh for pity's sake! The devil, Satan, whatever you want to call him has nothing to do with Halloween!

As usual Christians, in an effort to persuade "pagans" to leave the old ways, took over a much older observance & made it their own. The holiday dates back over 2,000 years to the Celts, who called the day Samhain.

There are plenty of sites online that discuss the history of Halloween--you might want to try reading one: http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/halloween/

There is absolutely nothing "evil" about Halloween, unless you count the evil-mindedness of folks who try their best to find evil in every little thing.

Rancher: That was excellent!!! I couldn't agree with you more.

Bunn: Ditto for you.

Thank you for expressing my thoughts exactly on this subject. It saved me from getting my wet nails messed up with all that typing.
