Spaz zacly.

Brein - I don't follow any rituals or rules unless I question them first. Why do they exist. Do I think they are with good reason, etc.

And another thing Brein:
how long is the parade?

I actually winced when I saw the title of this thread. I've never considered myself as a feminist (and very much dislike the term) and yet in the company I worked for the the 70s I helped blaze the way for other women who followed. I didn't talk about rights, I just simply through my actions (hard work, initiative, professionalism etc.) helped change the perception of the role of women in my work place.

Brein well i never said what i was holding the door open with LOL!!!!!

Auta I guess I'm rambling. I have no answers.
I like your "rambling, and I think you have great answers.

Irene - I always wonder about that. I know some really fierce, really strong women who take "feminist" actions all the time, but who hate and cringe at the word. Why is that? I really want to know, what is it that people don't like about the term? What negative connotations have been attached to it?
To me, being a feminist is something to be really proud of. I love being a really strong, self-sufficient, independent person, which goes against everything I was taught.

"Women are not so weak that they can't open a damn door themselves."

Rocker, I'm really sorry you feel that way.

Most of the women I know appreciate it. Funny, I also do the same for men, some of which are bigger and stronger than I am. Some of them also appreciate it.

Yes it is out of respect for them as a human being. You don't usually walk up to a stranger and say I appreciate you, but you can do little things to let them know that in an unthreatening way.

No rocker, in my world there isn't a problem with sexism. I don't see the world through the eyes of an activist. I treat everyone just like they should be treated as my equal.

I think the problem with the word "feminist" is that it conjures an image of Gloria Steinem's face. Icky.

autarchic, I too hold the door open for anyone coming in behind me, or even in front of me coming my way. It was the way I was raised and its the polite thing to do. Comes natually for me. I also always smile and nod to people who come into eye contact with me. Habit, and I usually get a smile back. I think its called manners. Not a word like feminist, macho, whatever. M.A.N.N.E.R.S.

i dont know maybe it is my upbringing. i always walk on the traffic side of the sidewalk when walking with a woman. i was taught that when i was young. it was considered a safer place for the woman to be on the inside. please dont attack me for that for petes sake.

Oh my god I love her so much. Have you read her books??? The woman is BRILLIANT!!! It is my goal in life just to get her to sign one of her books for me! She has done SO MUCH for women!!!

I think I have to have a nervous breakdown now.

Nice try, Hep. I am quite sure Brien knows he is not being "attacked". We are having a really good (and funny) discussion. Don't try to pit one against another and start trouble. You are SO predictable. What's the matter Hep, you weren't getting enough attention?

I always manage to put my foot in it somehow, LOL.

Nope, never read one of Gloria's books. What can I say? I like good-looking women. Gloria doesn't do it for me, not even in her Playboy bunny outfit. Yes, yes, I'm superficial! There, it's out! LOL.

Spaz - PS: I think Gloria is beautiful! If she wasn't a straight girl, I would've chased her to the end of the earth and begged her to marry me

Rocker: I don't know - perhaps the word "feminist" gives me the image of women "huddling" together for protection. There's an old expression:

Sparrows flock; eagles fly alone.

Brein - WHY?

sigh

Um - did ya read any of my posts here?
And um - did ya happen to notice women don't have white male privelege?

Sorry Brein that's the best I can do to answer in a thread while I'm tired. READ her books, like a good little feminist and you will understand why. I promise.
