Gravid, in the early eighties I worked with a woman from Nebraska. She could not believe the comments her co-workers still made about the Civil War. They routinely talked about various battlefields, slavery, state's rights. Although I live about ten miles from one of the major battlefields, I don't think of it in the same way that these guys did.

Credit where credit is due........ Bush Sr. quoted as hating Saddam and in hindsight he should have been deposed by force. This doesn't help Bush Jr's case. Bush Sr. should have kept his personal feelings on the matter to himself. This adds credence to the issue of invading Iraq as being a personal Bush family thang. Pretty dumb thing for a senior statesman to do, especially when his son is the President calling for the invaision of Iraq. Dumb and dumber I guess.

Well, you only have to look at the Bush rhetoric about our reason for going to attack Iraq. First, his administration said that it was about Terrorism. On close examination of the facts and merits of that argument, that reason fell apart. Then, it was to make Iraq comply with UN resolutions. They tried to justify their case by lambasting the UN about such nonsense as "if you make a resolution, then you have to have it followed, or else everything that you stand for is bogus." That didn't impress the diplomats at the diplomatic conference, but it sure impressed a lot of Republicans around here I will tell you! Now that Iraq has done the laughingly simplest thing to clearly out-maneuver Bush & Co by allowing inspectors back into Iraq unconditionally (for a while), just today Rumsfeld was touting the new line of crap reasoning: "If we don't get them they'll get us! It may be days, months, or years, but they surely will" (almost an exact quote). Right. Paranoid reasoning. The world is a dangerous place and a powder keg always waiting for something to set it off. Every nation is so dangerous to each other that the Earth is one armed camp. And because Saddam/Iraq might one day try to pull a 9-11 attack on us, we therefore have justification to go beat them up! At this point, only the really stupid followers of Bush still believe in this nonsense.

I just heard this old CCR song on the way home and thought it belonged on this thread. (Ignore the irony of it being sung by a bunch of rich dudes.)

Fortunate Son

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no,
