Krafty - No. Since his sentence obviously allowed for parole I'm assume the was some type of extenuating circumstances that we are not aware of. Without knowing all of the facts of the case I cannot make a determination one way or another
If it was nothing more than a thrill kill made while on route to his proposed career as a mercenary then yes, I think he should have been given the death penalty. What he accomplished later is irrelevent to me in that case. He robbed three people of their right to accomplish greater things later in life. Why should he be treated any better? (Again - please notice the IF that started this paragraph before pointing out that the actual particulars are not known - this opinion is based on a hypothetical).
