Stop - what are you talking about? I thought we were discussing offshore outsoucing of radiology films and suddenly you are griping about imigrants and pap smears......

Helen - I encourage a lot of things, that doesn't mean that I am the reason for their existance. Hospitals made the decision to do this not the insurance company. Where do you have info on insurance companies encouraging this? Insurance companies never pay actual cost. There is a predetermined flat rate coverage per procedure.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I'm not arguing about reason for existance. I am arguing that the Insurance Industry in America controls the Health care system. It's as simple as that. The "predetermined flat rate" that you mention will simply be reduced by the insurance company.

Costs have been driven so high that few of us could afford health care without insurance. After all, the insurance company needs a market for their product.

BTW...for some others here...Insurance is not a benevolent corporation. If you have no "insurance" to 'Cover' a life saving medical procedure, you will die.

i am referring to the trend of cost cutting- contract workers to work on kitchen counter for papsmear work, foreign contract pharmacists to fill our precription and now sending our xrays and scans to overseas lab technician.
insurance companies keep a file called provider file on their claim processing system by territory and procedure.
if you are a doctor on east side manhatten ,the insurer would pay you more for the same service rendered by someone in rural idaho.

back to gas prices....

we were in Birmingham AL this weekend and stopped at a truck stop to buy diesel for the truck. The truckers are talking about boycotting buying gas and going on stike for a week. It's killing them to have to pay the high prices for gas. Diesel was $1.59 a gallon. It was $1.53 thursday, by saturday it was $1.59.

OK that is truly complete babble -

::foreign contract pharmacists to fill our precription::

Those are called immigrants unless you also consider yourself to be a foreign contract worker,

no,those foreign pharmacists are not immigrants, just like the computer programmers brought in to fix the Y2k problems, they are brought in on special work visa by their agency.
the agency recruits them in india ,apply for that special visa for them,it has to guarantee to the us immigration office that they will be gainfully employed while in the states .
i have talked to some of the indian programmers, they received 76k a year whether the agency can find them work or not, while they were working, they were billed at 250 dollars an hour and 450 for overtime.
you can see, after y2k ,those with common skills have to be sent home .
and now they are not even bringing them here, they are going over there and pay them 25k a year.

glassgrl - An analyst the other day said to lokk for oil to hit $40 a barrel this year.

$2 a gallon average for gas will be a reality.

IF the truckers do rally and go on strike, that would bring the gas prices down. I don't think people realize how many truckers supply the nation with our goods. I'm all for a week long trucking strike! That would be like if we all stayed home and didn't drive or buy gas for a week.

It would mean that I might not get fresh lettuce or other things that I regularly expect to be at my grocery store that week, but I don't believe there's a shortage of gasoline either. (that's driving the prices of gas up, I've been to Texas and seen all the capped oil wells.)

Gas prices are high and I've heard $3.00 a gallon being tossed around.

It's like locally - if a gas station can charge a higher price when there is no competition around - they can and will do so. If there's competition with a lower price and the stations want your business, they have to compete in order to stay in the game.

there are many places where folks pay 5 dollars a gallon-europe,asia and carribean.
how is going on strike going to bring down the price of gasoline??
the refinery buys the crude and refine it into diesel, gas and jet fuel, and you dont have to be a genius to know crude oil price has not come down to 24 as some have been expecting after the war.
by the way,the post office has the same problem too.
last year when my car was in the repair shop,i went without a car for 10 days,i just ate whatever i have in pantry and fridge.
