Did anybody see the commentaries on TV about the start of her trial?

It is hilarious with her lone two supporters in front of the court house!! I had to laugh at loud as one was yelling to her, "you go, girl". And the one in the chef's hat presented a Martha alert chart.
I cant help but wonder if Martha found that somewhat distasteful and peasantly? Or is reports of her being the ice queen overblown?
The odds that liberal New Yorkers and probably the most bombarded of all cities with media will give her a fair trial is thin.

I'd like to know why going after Martha has been deemed more important than going after Ken Lay...

plsmith, is only that they have not gone after him as YET?? I thought I heard something about the justice department and his name mentioned in the same sentence not too long ago. ?

And does your bleeding liberal heart really go out for her or are you just being sarcastic?

*I* will admit I feel bad for her for real. But I feel sorry for anybody who is under the gun of the supposed strong arm of the government. (It is just unconceivable to me that a woman making billions or whatever her estimated worth is, would knowingly cut corners for 250,000.) I think it was the brokers idea. When I worked on wall street too many moon ago, I remember those brokers calling up from the floor or where ever they were in satellite offices raising Cain when they didn't get their -- and I forget the name of it -- something like B12, or some such -- but it was a tiny sum of monies (commissions) which amounted to anywhere from 12.00 to 500.00 dollars dispersed from the mutual funds transactions.

And hasnt this broker turned supposed evidence on her for a deal??????

Going after small potatoes.er, excuse me, "pommes" Martha will make us all feel like the government is "doing something", while the scumbags who cost thousands of people their retirement savings walk around free. The whole thing makes me sick. How many of the current administration's pals do you think will see the inside of a jail, much less pay a fine bigger than their country club membership....

Neroter, "they" were on Martha like chickens on a June bug within days of her 'mistake' ;
"they" have had ample reason to go after Mr. Lay for over a year now. To gain insight as to why "they" haven't, see Profe's post above...

And the key phrase in profe's explanation is "current administration's pals". Ken Lay is a long time pal of the Bush dynasty along with many other infamous characters.

Imelda Marcos Juror Among Finalists for Martha Stewart Jury
By Larry Neumeister Associated Press Writer
Published: Jan 24, 2004

NEW YORK (AP) - A woman who acquitted former Philippines first lady Imelda Marcos of racketeering and fraud is among the four dozen people entering the final round of jury selection for the Martha Stewart trial.

Marcos was defended by one of Stewart's lawyers, John J. Tigue Jr., and that prompted prosecutors to raise an initial objection to the potential juror.

U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum allowed the woman to remain in the pool after she said she did not recognize Tigue, according to a transcript of Friday's jury selection that was released Saturday.

I don't think she made a mistake, I'd just like to know why she's being crucified and the real criminals are drinking martinis on their yachts, their actions had thousands of victims, all of them working class American people who put their faith in the advice of their employers and the people they paid good money to for financial advice....the whole thing stinks...real bad.

Brings to mind something that Lauren Bacall once said: "When a man speaks his mind it is accepted as charming, interesting, sexy, but when a woman speaks hers she is aggressive, unattractive, pushy-- some might even say a #*!@."

Hey Prof - Bet she gave to the wrong camp in the last election.
The smarter ones give to both sides now so their butt is covered either way.
No wonder people don't really want a robust third party.

Bunicula, I have to agree. There must be some bit**y'ness going on when you've running a billion dollar empire! But nobody calls Trump a bit***.

I have to laugh, tho. Happened upon Martha's show one day and saw some crocheted potholders and things she was featuring from the fifties.
Then not too long after saw them at a garage sale and probably would never have given them a 2nd look. Bought them for a dime each and sold them right away on ebay!!@lol!!

None. I didn't mention him. But since you did, the man presided over one of the biggest finacial rapes of employees and investors that this country has ever seen. He's also one of the President's largest contributors and a key advisor on his energy "policy". He's also walking around free. I'm not saying Martha Stewart should not have consequences for her actions if she did something wrong. I'm just wondering why the big fish are getting away in this deal. Who exactly were Martha Stewart's victims?

I have no more proof that he did than you have proof that he didn't twelve. It's my opinion, just like it's yours. You don't have to prove anything to anyone to have an opinion here, and neither do I.The fact remains, thousands lost millions from the malfeasance if not criminal activity in the company he headed. If he didn't know, he should have. That makes him culpable , in my opinion.

And I'll ask you again, who were Martha's victims? Whose pensions did she rob? To whom did she give false investment advice? No matter how much you personally dislike a weathly, powerful woman, she's small potatoes and a convenient dodge for the government compared to Mr. Lay and his buddies.

Should those found responsible in the Enron scam go to prison... Yes
However the investigation is not over and some believe that the #2 man Skilling will be the actual Heavy...

In Martha's case, those who got hurt were those people who lost when the stock when down and didn't have the inside information she did.

That's true, but it does not make them her victims. They would have lost regardless. Her profit did not increase their loss. The profits of the principals in the company, on the other hand, directly caused their losses.

Jurors in the Martha Stewart Trial
The Associated Press
Published: Jan 27, 2004

Here is some information about the 12 jurors selected Monday to hear the Martha Stewart stock-fraud case. The information is gleaned, where available, from transcripts of juror interviews last week. Juror names have not been released, and additional information about the jurors that was given in questionnaires also has not been released.

-Juror No. 1: Woman. Said she was "very familiar" with the name Martha Stewart. Recalls the names of ImClone Systems and its founder, Sam Waksal, from news reports.

-Juror No. 2: Woman. Said she is "not very familiar with corporate dialect" and has no feelings about Stewart.

-Juror No. 3: Man. Lost money in a mutual fund partly because of the collapse of Enron Corp. Has friends at Merrill Lynch & Co., the brokerage that once employed Stewart's co-defendant and former broker Peter Bacanovic.

-Juror No. 4: Man. Vaguely recalls hearing something about Stewart or Bacanovic in the media about a year ago, "but I forgot what it was about."

-Juror No. 5: Woman. Has one relative who is a judge and another who works for the attorney general of New Jersey. Believes some people are unfairly jailed, and that poor people "often don't have the right to as much justice as they would like to have." Wishes the government's prosecution of corporate scandals "was moving along a little faster."

-Juror No. 6: Woman. Works for a publishing company. Has met Mary Meeker, the Morgan Stanley Internet analyst whose name appears on a report that the government may introduce as evidence.

-Juror No. 7: Woman. Has a brother who was a Westchester County police officer and a sister-in-law who once worked for Merrill Lynch. Saw a portion of Stewart's interview with CNN in which she asserted her innocence.

-Juror No. 8: Man. Communications technician who once worked for the firm Shearson, Loeb, Rhoades. Has occasionally flipped past Stewart's TV show, "but it is not anything of interest to me."

-Juror No. 9: Man. Translator of Italian who also works as a paralegal. Has worked on copyright-infringement cases. Has read about the case in newspapers but "I tend to read everything with a grain of salt."

-Juror No. 10: Woman. Once sued her cleaners claiming they were responsible for stains that showed up on an antique dress. Best friend once worked at Merrill Lynch.

-Juror No. 11: Woman. Works for a law firm that handles personal-injury cases. Currently suing a nursing home that she believes was negligent in her grandmother's death.

-Juror No. 12: Woman. Pharmacist, originally from Uganda. While she has been in the United States, she has seen Stewart's "cooking recipes and stuff" on television, but has not paid close attention.
