Hello. I recently won an auction (Canadian seller). After item was sent, he told me that it will takes minimal 3 weeks to be in my hands. It was regular (ground) mail, not
UPS. Is it correct? Thanks!

It sounds about right. I'm in western Canada. Last summer a seller on the U.S. east coast shipped me 4 identical sized boxes on the same day at the same time (he e-mailed me when he mailed them). The first box arrived in exactly 3 weeks (on a Wednesday). The second and third box arrived two days later and the fourth box arrived the following Tuesday.

It depends where you & the seller live. From coast to coast can take 2-3 weeks. Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.

My Surface Post shipments average 10-14 days from Canada to the U.S.

Small packet--surface is 4-6 weeks according to the USPS, though it can arrive quicker on occassion.

I am in Atlantic Canada and my shipments to the US and Canada are almost ALL Small Packet Surface Mail. Canada Post says these can take 6-8 weeks, but mine have all been taking almost exactly 2 weeks to arrive. I'm sending across Canada, and to Texas, Ohio, California, New Hampshire, Oklahoma... It doesn't matter. 2 weeks almost every time.

Small Packet 4-6 weeks, that's a load of B.S.

2-3 weeks is norm via Surface, 7-10 days via Air.

The general rule for us is 2-3 weeks for surface. 7-10 days for airmail. It can be faster, it can be slower but those are good benchmarks from which to work.

Dang! Does this explain why payments from all my Canadian bidders also seem to take upwards of 3-4 weeks to get to me?

What a drag!!!

Real funny Barry, you should be so lucky that Canadians bid on your little booklets.

Letter mail & Parcel Post are like comparing apples & oranges. Letters sent to me from as far away as TX get here in 4-5 days.

I'm finding that small packet air is a little faster - 5 to 7 days. I am using the zip-plus-4 code and using MSWord to print the bar code. That seems to speed it up.

I gave up on small packet surface - too many unhappy bidders, too many 'where is it?' emails.

And Barry, your check is in the mail....

red-deer: Actually, it wasn't a joke. If letter mail & Parcel Post are two different animals, why does it consistently take upwards of 3 weeks for Canadian bidders to get their payment to me? And who cares how long it takes a letter to get from Texas to Canada? I'm talking about the other direction here.

I actually considered starting a thread on this topic awhile back ["why does it take so long for payment to arrive from Canada?"], but I figured that some people might take it as Canadian-bashing. But since I've got you here, can you explain why it takes payment from Canda longer to get to me than from any other country in the world that I've dealt with? Heck -- I've had payment arrive from BELGIUM faster than from Canada. Is it the postal service itself that's slow in Canada?

Barry

Barry, many times it depends on where in Canada the mail is coming from and where it needs to be sent to be sorted first.

For example, if I just want to send a letter across town, it is sent to a city in another province, 6 hours away first, to be sorted, then it is sent back here to be delivered.

Maybe that's part of the delay you've experienced with your payments. If they're coming from a remote area, they might have to be sent to be sorted to some place in the opposite direction first.

I can say that I have not received any complaints about my payments to the US. They are always there within 4 to 7 days. I have sent payments to California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana... Always good delivery time. (I am in Atlantic Canada, by-the-way.)

Barry

I just got an email that my payment from Canada on an auction that ended June 15 was received in CT on June 21.

Not sure why you have a problem.

Biggest delay is often getting money orders in Canada. They aren't as readily available as in the US. Most of us have to get them from a bank during banker's hours.

You might try giving your buyers your zip+4 code.

Barry: I live in Canada on the west coast and I recently purchased an item from you. I mailed my cash on May 1st by regular mail and you received it on May 6th. So not all Canadian mail is slow.

We mailed a package to Texas on Monday and it arrived today. We never seem to have many problems with our packages or letters.

Just "exactly" how many payments have you had from Canada Barry?

Any payment I have "ever" sent to the U.S. has *always" taken no longer than 1 week.
Have you checked the Postal Stamps &/or dates on the funds to see when they were actually sent? Have you ever considered that the delay is on YOUR side of the border? Maybe those Postal boys in MA don't know how to read Kanadian spellin? Maybe they only give priority treatment to Packet Watches?

I had a customer send me an MO via USPS Global Priority last month, it took 4 weeks to arrive!

Why is it that whenever there's a problem with cross border payments/shipping everyone asumes it's the Postal system up here?

Trust me, the USPS is just as bogged down & screwed up as Canada Post. I know dealers on the U.S. side that have had Priority Parcels take 2+ weeks when only going one State over.

I wonder how long it takes your little booklets to reach Canada?

It took nine days for Barry's booklet to arrive. It is a good booklet, by the way.

I use air mail exclusively (except in Canada where it is automatic). If I mail a package on a Saturday to the USA, it's usually in the hands of the receiver by the the 2nd Monday after that. It costs a bit more, but results in happy 'customers' (most of my stuff is trades).

Minimum 10 days- Maximum 21, (the range for Surface mail) Lately some airmail is even taking 14 days. Usually tho- airmail is shorter-10 days average.

reddeer: I was merely quoting what the USPS has to say on the matter--no need to be rude. And in fact, I have had it take that long when sending or receiving from Canada. Most often they *do* come quicker, but nothing is absolute.

Bunnicula ..... My bad. I meant the USPS info on their site was B.S. ...... not you!

I had a Global Priority letter that took 4 weeks from OH, but I wouldn't tell people it takes that long. That was a "rare" incident.

My experience shipping Canada to U.S. is the same as Reddeer's--it usually takes 10-14 days (from eastern Ontario), with California taking the longest. I for one am getting tired of hearing about how "slow" Canadian postal service is especially from people who take their time making payment and then blame it on the mail.

Hi reddeer, long time no talk to

Parcels to California from Canada always seem to take a few days longer and some of our bidders say that the problem is within their state.

One lady that resides in the Silicon Valley area told us that there were not enough postal workers and that the ones that deliver her mail actually live in homeless shelters as they can not afford the rents.

When I lived in Toronto, mail to California took the longest of all the U.S. states. Now that I'm in Calgary, I find that mail to California (and Washington state) takes the least amount of time. As a general rule of thumb, mail traveling east-west (i.e. coast to coast) takes longer than mail traveling north-sourth (e.g. Toronto-Florida).

I also find that parcels tend to travel faster in summer than in winter.

Someone at Canada Post explained to me one time why mail from California is so much quicker to Western canada than other areas.
It has to do with the two major mail hubs one in LA ships straight to Vancouver and then through the Prairie Provinces- this goes relatively quick for some reason (despite all the complaints about Californie Post Offices).

Eastern addresses have 1 or two more hubs (or is it hoops?)to go thru- the major cluster frig being Toronto.

I don't know what happens East of TO- the person didn't know.

Since a lot of my business is with Californians-I'm happy.
