I just heard this on Jay Leno. I forget... do you live in West Virginia, twelvepole? If so I hope it wasn't you.
(Blacksville, West Virginia-AP) July 14, 2004 — Warning: Smoking in the outhouse can be dangerous.
A man is recovering from burns after lighting a cigarette in a portable outhouse -- causing the outhouse to explode.
It happened yesterday in Blacksville, West Virginia.
A spokeswoman for Monongalia (mahn-un-GAYL'-yuh) Emergency Medical Services said the explosion was caused by a build-up of methane gases inside the outhouse. She said the methane didn't "take too kindly" to the lit cigarette.
The man's name and condition aren't being released, but emergency officials say he wasn't severely hurt and drove himself to a clinic.

stopwhining: Lots of people nowadays have never even seen a real farm outhouse. It's a big deep hole dug in the ground with the wooden stall and toilet seat built on top of it. NOT the same as a porta-potty.
You "doo the poo" down the hole. It just sits down there, there isn't any chemical to dissolve it. Gases escape as it eventually decomposes.
Hypothetically if you shut the toilet seat when done using it, and it sealed the hole too tightly, those gases would build up down there, possibly for a long time.
Smoking in a "natural" outhouse is a dumb thing to do, but this used to happen all the time!
[Edited to add:]
But that doesn't make it any less funny
