Well, maybe the seller just decided to end the auction early.

Hey, it could happen.

Hmmmm, so it looks like the van-go, van-went huh? The thing I wonder about is that little sticker on the back signed J.A.PAN. Any ideas?

Annnnnd... the auction is now gone from the OldandSold homepage as well.

So, that's it, huh? Gone with a whimper, not a bang. Anybody think THESHAR, lagoldie, flowblue2 and the rest of the gang will stop by to offer apologies? Hey -- it could happen, you know.

Right after those winged monkeys fly out of my butt, that is....

Gee, now that the auction is yanked, what do we talk about? LOL Call me a masochist if you will, but I was getting used to the verbal abuse

I don't want to turn the lights out before the final curtain call, but...kudos to HCQ for making personal contact with key figures in this matter, and to all the various posters (too many to name!) who have contributed much to this engaging thread.

Ya know, it's funny how lagoldie kept insisting that somebody contact Mr. Haskins, and when somebody does all that happens is that it completely discredits the one mention of an "expert" opinion as to the authenticity of the painting.

Kind of reminds me of the way Gary Hart kept daring the media to follow him around and try to find any dirt or scandal about him. And, sure enough, they did.

Ya ever notice that the people with the worst hands are the ones that bluff the loudest? Of course, when somebody actually CALLS their bluff, boy do they look STUPID!!!

Anyone who gets served with legal papers on this, be sure to let us know. Especially Ramona.

I'm left wondering why Scott Haskins only this morning discovered he was being totally misquoted in a $2,000,000 online art sale description.

You'd think someone would have told him the auction existed before today, wouldn't you? Starvn, perhaps? Owner? Lagoldie?

Well, just so it doesn't get lost for posterity, here is the post from Mr. Haskins with the name of the private individual edited out:

I've been asked to respond to some of the dialog, slandering, theorizing and conjecturing regarding the documentation from FACL. While I'm not interested in "getting into it" with every art enthusiast/expert on your bulletine board, I will respond to a request by [NAME OF PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL DELETED] to comment. The documents from FACL that I have seen on the web site are all authentic and speak for themselves.

One detail (probably a misquote from an interview) should be clarified though: It was stated, "Mr. Haskins has discussed the painting with other art experts, including a Mr. John Rewald..."

I have never spoken with Mr. Rewald... regarding any matter. During a visit of Mr. Rewald to LA, I knew of the meeting between the owner and Mr. Rewald and the result of that meeting. I also have heard from another source that Mr. Rewald's papers (donated after his death) include a file with the owner's name on it. Therefore, from two independant sources, it was confirmed to me that they met.

My phone number has been published. If your questions and interest are compelling, feel free to call me to confirm this posting.

Not to slam any of the other *really* long threads on AW, but is this one the first long thread with substance? *once again, I don't mean that in a way to belittle any other thread*

It was good of Mr. Haskins to post and everyone would have understood if he had chosen not to.

For those those checking page 25 first and wondering if it would be worth reading the entire opus from the start; Yes, Yes, Yes.

Pareau, my thoughts exactly...

Coming soon to a Holiday Inn near you...

"Sunday, Sunday, Sunday"...

They seem to have given up although, silly me, I haven't been keeping track of the posted end of auction time and date.

I feel I must make a confession. There was text on the OAS site concerning next month's auction of another great piece of artwork. It was to be of a priceless work presently in my possession. It is a little known fact that Mondrian, on a USA tour in the early 1960s was introduced to the Ohio Art School of Painting and was so impressed by the new medium that he quickly "Etch-A-Sketched" up a masterpiece. That it is his work has been validated by a my patented method of scientific analysis by which I discerned his distinctive and unique "knob turnings."

Alas, I had to cancel the upcoming auction due to the unanticipated disaster which occured when I laid the artwork face down on the scanner. I have had to regroup by submitting another offering from my vast collection of undiscovered art treasures. While I admit that "Georgia O'Keefe's Used Panties" lacks the cachet of my anticipated offering, I'm sure they will pique the interest of untold unnamed Asian Gazillionaires.

By the way, the thread's originator marched over to the Moderator's Corner to demand this thread be closed as it has "deteriorated"! That's rich! Considering some of the language problems we've had in this thread, could they have meant it has become "illuminating"? As in, "gee, can't we rewrite history, make like this auction never happened, and stifle people's opinions and any subsequent presentation of new facts?" Don't think so...

Of course this thread has "deteriorated"! After all, it was originally started to promote a particular auction at a particular auction site. The auction has now been pulled, and the site roundly discredited, so the thread is no longer serving the purpose for which it was started.

Still good reading, though!

Gee...I remember the OAS'ers asking if the painting was proven to be real...would anyone apologize......guess the OAS'ers aren't gonna say anything now.

Great job all! I am glad you didn't give up.

Dang! I blinked and missed the end of it!

HCQ - I do have the various bits of evidence offered, including the HTML of the listing page in its last known incarnation with all the documentation it linked to. This includes the fake Rewald letter, should his daughter-in-law need someone to testify that the letter was actually offered as "evidence" of the painting's authenticity.

I am waiting in anticipation for the next painting offered on old and sold by the owner of the purported "Yellow Roses". The statement below was taken from the original auction listing:

"We will be offering another painting of
an artist who is equally as important,
which was one of several purchased
by the owner's Grandmother. Please
review the infra-red to the left which
exhibits a sticker from Chain and
Hardy's, the bookstore owned by
Helen Henderson Chain. It adds to
the body of evidence. On "the back of
the same painting is writing and a
serial number from Ambroise Vollard,
the art dealer from Paris who knew
most of the impressionist artists."
Look for this painting to be offered
next month."

You know what's the best part about all this, at least from my corner?

I think all of us - including the defenders of the seller and OAS, however unintentionally - have done much to demonstrate that for some folks "it" still IS about credibility - and that those so foolish as to actually believe nobody is watching, or nobody'll care, had better look over their shoulders more than once, and jeez, at least learn to lie convincingly. Sloppy dissembling is sooooo insulting.

You have truly restored this recluse's faith in humanity. I am impressed with your ability to discern, research (countless fascinating contributions from many, many posters), and just have the backbone to ask "Say what?" without flinching.

However, the (admittedly enjoyable) intellectual digging this required - notwithstanding that it was conducted from my boudoir - have really taxed what cognitive functions actually remaining to me these days, when remembering why I walked frmo the living room to the bedroom is often a challenge.

I think I will go indulge in a nice migraine shot, chased by a gob of muscle relaxants and a smooch from Ramona. (She is a very comforting pillow, if rather bristly.)

And I'll check back in shortly.

What? You're surprised?

Gee -- I just found out why OAS pulled the auction. It seems that the psychic woman who had earlier "authenticated" the "Sunflowers and Oleander" painting called them up on the phone. Apparently, she had just finished channelling the spirit of Vincent Van Gogh ["Vinnie" to his friends] himself, and Van Gogh emphatically denied that this was his painting. And, since this bit of evidence was apparently much stronger than all the other evidence suggesting the painting was authentic combined, OAS decided to pull the painting.

Hey -- it COULD have happened!

[Still waiting for that apology, BTW...]

Regards,

Barry
