abacaxi, you're saying straight out that this co-op won't work because they won't even enforce themselves!
I would do random enforement and anyone not following the by-laws are immediately ejected.
I would say if this co-op allows 300 year old books, go ahead without me.
$200 million is the average amount spent by online corporations on marketing. I recommended 5% of that for the co-op and was shot down. Monster.com spent that much for one super bowl ad.
Anway, I'm withdrawing my input on this co-op, way too much negative synergy even before this gets started! It spells doom.

Quickdraw -
My wishes would be that EACH general item have experienced dealers and collectors design THEIR categories AND publish a definition of what each category is about so that it makes sense to those familiar with that market.
And yes, it would be understood that you stick to the definitions or get the boot.
300 year old books would have a DEFINITE place in the site ... just not in with the Romance paperbacks.

quikdraw: Advertising is a tricky widget. Frankly I don't think you really know much about it.(And no, I'm not trying to insult you)
A lot of the dot.coms sell ads to each other. It's paper trading and not real dollars. Yes, some of them spent money, but most didn't.
Frankly ebay didn't become ebay by advertising.
If you build it they will come!
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
My point is that if you build a good online auction house that has an angle word will spread. And there are many ways to hit our demographics.
The point is that we have to step one before we get to step 37?
Your feedback is pretty iffy. Over 5% negs and neutrals. Ebay transactions are fairly simple usually, yet you seem to have had more than your share of trouble with them. And you're in charge of planning the co-op thing. Just wanted to be clear on that. Thank you.

canvid,
Pretty bold statement, "frankly I don't think you don't know much about it {advertising}."
You've lost all credibility in my book as someone who is qualified to judge others when you start a thread title, "Is a co-op a good idea and alternative to ebay?" Apparently you're fishing for ideas because you really have no clue about marketing, yet at the same time you manage to be overly critical. You stated "advertising is a tricky widget," which openely suggests you haven't an understanding of the topic. Advertising in my opinion is very precise, I don't see anything tricky about it because it's based on social science.
I wouldn't expect someone of your calibur to understand my ideas. It's over your head. But it would be appropriate for you to stand back and let others take over the reigns.

QD: I'm not going to quibble about who know's more about marketing. I wasn't trying to step on your boots. But for anyone to arbitrarily suggest any amount at this point for marketing is a bit premature in my opinion.
And I'm not doing this to lead a popularity race. I'm trying to work to create a stable selling platform online for myself and my fellow sellers which is why I will only work in a group that's one vote, one member, non-profit, and non-saleable.
Loose: At Twinsoft's behest? He, I, and others started a message board. There's some problems over who's doing what. I am/was supposed to be organizing that committee.
There's lots to do to get this going. I suggest you post here and on the board and help play a role to get this off the ground.
