I first came on AW way back in 1998. Of course my profile reflects a 1999 date because of the big AW screw-up that dumped many of our ID's.
All this hoopala about the credit card is like old times. Anybody remember all the "verification" debates surrounding eBay's wanting CC's.
Then of course we also had months and months of "moderation" debates, concerning these boards. Self-moderation was the cry of the day.
Of course what I miss most is all the "snipe" debates that would go on and on and on.
Then there were the "vero" problems and "shilling" threads.
Oh and the "Cyberyenta" suspension and resulting ribbon campaign.
And Neomax, who could ever forget his endless promotion of AU, now long gone.
Then there was the "town hall" meetings, where posters actually tried to accomplish something.
Remember too, the birth of OAUA, which from what I understand, had all but died in flames. Too bad.
How can we forget the "possee" and the battles concerning feedback padding.
I pretty much quit posting here. Went to AP and hung out at the Diner for a while, then it closed down. A few friends and I went to a small private board to keep in touch.
I heard thru the grapevine of AW's pending changes and all the farewell's being posted. Figured I might as well come back for one last thread before my ID is dropped from the roles.
Since 9/11 my eBay sells dropped. But since the antrax scare, goodness, I don't know if my business will survive.
To all good luck with your auctions and business'.

...Christopher slinks in as surreptitiously as one can on a razor scooter with glow in the dark wheels, speaking softly and carrying a big heffalump net.
Whap
Glory be and triumph! Finally got her...
D. (who can now look back and see much wisdom in things said that once were not so clear...)

Justme! My eyes lit up when I saw your name on this thread. You have no idea how often I wondered what had become of you. Your last post here on AW was in early December 1999. I used to lurk a little at AP and did read some of your posts there. I remember your being upset with Paul and then I lost track of you.
I'm sorry I am only seeing you again to say good-bye. You were one of the few bright spots in my memory of posting in the latter part of 1999.
Most of the people you'll remember, who have stayed at AW, moved to the RoundTable forum here on AW quite a while ago. There's an "Announcement" thread there too.
Tell Christopher I'm not that easily caught. Been a while since we played. I still remember Jen's alien smiley.
I've seen things a lot differently over time too. Hindsight offers a much better view.
Irene,
I've missed talking with you. You've always been one of the stable rocks at AW and I always looked for your opinions on matters.
I've lurked here on occasion, mostly when eBay was having problems or changing things. Always knew the AW crowd would fill me in on what was happening.
The last time I posted here much at all was right when the Round Table was being formed. I hid there to get away from the "wars" at EO. I remember doing some beheadings and baskets and stuff. Seems like it was with KatyD and somebody? Gosh that's been a while.

Justme!! You do remember the guillotine and buckets and KatyD and me!![I was Timeworn at the time...hadn't changed my name here yet] That was fun! Seems so long ago! I've wondered where you wandered off to.
Good to see you again. We used to have some fun in the old days........

Hey justme and diana!
How delightful to see you both!
And a great nostalgic initial post, justme.
Whatever the eventual effects of this decision to require CC verification, at least I've gotten to see, however briefly, several of my favorite people from the past, here and at the RT.
If I don't see either of you again, I wish you both the very best.

rawbunzel,
I didn't recognize you. That was fun wasn't it.
Amy,
Good to see you. I remember we were both considered "pom pom" cheerleaders for eBay. Remember ThinkingHat's "think positive" posts. Just about drove some people nuts.
Antiquary,
Good to see you too. Do you remember the time out threads where we were all supposed to go and count until we cooled off. LOL, I spent a lot of time in there. 521, 522, 523...
We really did work pretty hard at self-moderating, and actually didn't do too bad all things considered.
Lots of good memories from those early times.
I think that most of us are still around, though scattered here and there, or just popping up occasionally. I wish that I had copies of those old threads to read today.
Hope your eBay sales pick up. I know that this is a pretty rough time.

I remember coming here when the whole baculum controversy was happening at eBay...and the fellow who'd been suspended came here to post in (relative) peace. Does anyone remember when that was? I know it was before the exodus from DNS....

Sorry, I didn't see this thread down here and started a similar one. I guess there is plenty of room for "memories."

packer,
I can send you your post if you'd like. I had to delete the thread because names were mentioned of people that don't wish to be named on these boards because they cannot respond.

Ok Joice,
But you better read it first, because you may deside to zap it.
If I can post it...send away.
Thanks,

Toke!!! (Got any brownies left? )
Let's see, the cyberyenta deal was in like the fall of 98, and the DNF exodus was in summer of 99. So I'm guessing the bone issue was probably around the spring of 99.
Do you remember when Mark tried to get everybody to leave the Q&A on eBay and come here to post instead?
Antiquary, speaking of self-moderation. Remember back when we had to email in objections for posts and if enough people objected then Mark or Cari would zap the post or the poster?
Alright, congrats, on the quiting smoking. That is not easy. I know. I quit a few years ago myself.
I remember Shosh helping here, but she was mostly on another other forum. I got to know her best over at AP. She had a lot of "elf" friends running around with her there.

Hi gc2,
LOL, funny you should mention the pepperment saga, as that was in my post that never made it to the boards .
I too wonder if she ever got her skates or refund.
I have noticed that the "seller" horizonod? of the skates still posts here sometimes.
I was also wondering when the exodus from here happened over the "Brenda" feasco, where they all went to.
Remember..they started there own forum, I found it after they first were getting it organized but have since lost the bookmark because of puter crashing.

That experiment in a "self-moderating" board to replace AW crashed within a month, Packer. (I lurked there.)

Packer, do you know what happened to a poster whose user ID was (as best I remember it) "Tom in NJ"? May not have it exactly right, but his tagline went something like "I won't rest until all the junk in America has found new homes". Always interesting.
Of course, HCQ already left us (do you ever wonder if she still 'lurks'?)
And I found the dolls again, but I'm sure I'll lose them again before I can do anything with them.
Speaking of Peppermint, can you remember who was the third member of our 3AM Survivors' Club? I remembered for a long time, but the Oldtimer's Disease eventually caught up with me. I promised myself on that one that I would never allow myself to become "embroiled" in anything like that again...a kept promise.
Of course, some (not you and I, of course) may be nearing their last chances to 'tell off' some of their less-favorite posters.....Can't you just see the titles: "Hey, XXXXX in XXXXX, here's your sign!" Relating it to eBay might be difficult, but.....
As a card-carrying member, I'll still be here (at least for awhile - I never did take the time to learn FTP), but don't relish the idea of posting without moderation.

Hello Everyone,
I know we are all enjoying the memories, but please edit out the usernames, particularly because you may name someone that cannot come here to comment.

I remember when I could post under my ebay user name without worry that someone could come and screw with my auctions.
I remember what it was like at AW before the got partnered up with eBay and bought in with the API, not so long ago and I bet AW was profitable then, probably not as much now.
AW has always been the true "Safe Harbor" in the storms that seem to rage on a regular basis on eBay, PayPal, BillPoint, or really anything that has to do with auctions. Ever want to know what is or was happening all you had to do is check AW and if you didn't find your answer post and you would have it in a few minutes.
I'm sure that many of us will find another corner on the net, if not for the anthrax problems affecting sales it would actually be a good thing for me because I would send more time making ads and less on the boards.
justme2 Since 9/11 my eBay sells dropped. But since the anthrax scare, goodness, I don't know if my business will survive
This is the worse I've ever seen sales. Does anyone else keep good records? last night I just updated all our sales info in august we were closing on 34.3% of our auctions, three weeks ago we closing on 23.7%, last week we closed 17.3% this week I have had days close at 5 and 7%. This week we are in the hole and I wont know this weeks average until tonight's auctions close.
If someone else does keep good records how are my averages compared to yours?
May be it's time to go to the government to see if there is any bail out monies for full time sellers on ebay!
eBay fees are like being slowly pecked to death by chickens!!!

Thanks for the congrats, Justme... Believe it or not, I quit on a smoking thread Diana started, over at AP. Nobody could be more surprised than I that it actually worked!
BTW, Shosh manifestoed out of here, right before the CC thing. Hope to see her elsewhere...

sales is very slow on ebay but surprisingly there is life somewhere else-yahoo and amzn??
it makes me wonder if the ebay crowd is tapped out and now have a good reason to rest??
lets face it,some of the ebay bidders have been buying every day for years,it is time to rest .
