Ive been to three different carpet shops and my head is swimming. I'm not very good at picking colors.

I will tell y'all what I like in colors and you please please tell me what you think will work for carpet.

First off, I'd like to say that I don't like beige and other sensible colors but I dont want to get too wild either.

I find I'm drawn to bright bold reds oranges purples and yellows in art and in decorative items.

I thought to go with a berber so that my accesories can jump out but I feel like I'm copping out, ya know running scared from what I really want because I'm afraid I wont be able to make the look work and I'm afraid of looking too too loud. Know what I mean?

Anyway I found a carpet color that really grabbed me and I'm afraid of it.

I want honest opinions if you think bold accesories would look bad with.......... wild plum

I can't ask my Mom she'll tell me to get a beige berber.

Another reason I picked the wild plum instead of say the lighter shade or darker is because it seems a nice color for not showing dirt in between vaccuming too badly. It is not sculpted, its a solid color carpet.

The center color is the one, I really like the one above it but I think it's too light.

kitsch, if the wild plum jumped out and grabbed you by the throat, then that's what you need to go with!

BUT... if you are concerned about the permanence of the whole room being that color, is it possible to consider rugs of bold color on top of a more neutral color carpet?

When we bought this house, the public areas had just been recarpeted in a fairly neutral gray-blue, so I could not justify new flooring just for color. The rugs worked well for me.

I posted before I saw your color swatches.

Think about the light in your rooms too - the plum is fairly dark and might swallow the light unless you have lots of lamps. Is that a consideration? (Would be for me, especially in the winter.)

Hi Silkmoth

Funny you should mention lamps. I have been cruising ebay for lamps. I intend on buying a cool lamp once a month til I've got enough. They must be totally out there tho!

I think you should get what makes ya happy -- *you're* the one who has to live with your carpet day in and day out, not some "sensible" beige person. Besides, I think it says a lot about who you are: up front, bold, powerful, etc., to have the guts to skip "sensible" and go straight for "statement"

Congratulations on the new house!

I like bold colors but not in carpets. If you go with the plum color on the floors you may be limited in your use of accent colors. If plum suits your existing decor, I'd go with it. If not you may have difficulty getting things that compliment the shade.

If beige, taupe, or ecru aren't you, there are other less dramatic solids that will coordinate with a variety of other color schemes. I like burgundy myself. Doesn't mix with red or orange but handles some other shades well.

A multi-color, busy array can work too if it reflects your personal tastes. If you keep those pillows you were trying to list, almost anything will work with them.

I think, with your sense of style and your love of "out there" stuff, that you can make whatever you love work together.

Remember, it's much easier to make twenty colors work together than it is to make three or four. (Really. Trust me on this one!) You sound like you need a lot of ZING in your life. Go for it!

I see what you are saying about being limited, that is the crux of the issue.

The idea of neutral with rugs is a good one for most people. It's just that it would feel so cluttered to me. I really want open clean lines and spaces, kinda like a backdrop for art like a gallery but I want color in carpet....but the color I picked does not even seem to fit what I generally collect.

I am so confused.

Okay, what kinds of colors do you collect?

Not styles of lamps, or pillows, or furniture, but colors? Cool? Warm? Dark? Light?

Fluorescent lime?

not psycodelic colors (except those pillows, I like those) but I like bold bright colors. Actually I have no favorite color. My favorite spectrum is the colors in a fall sunset, orange peach purple red yellow that green that cant be described.

You're not really limited to everyday carpets, you know. Some of the commercial varieties lend themselves very well to home applications. Ask the guy at the carpet store to show you the carpets they sell to offices and stores. Most are exceptionally durable, easy to clean, and come in a wide variety of subbtly distinct shades and patterns. I beleve you may find something that suits your need for something out of the ordinary and still retain a good base shade for whatever you choose for decoration.

Story time: when my mom got to redo all the carpet in the house (not all at once...but within 2 years) she picked *red*.....I mean BLOOD RED, bordello RED....for the carpet in the guest room. Everyone (i.e., her mother) went "ick". She *loves* it!

If you are concerned about going 'hog wild', why not do a smaller room first....see how it is to live with.

Have you considered a netural type carpet....but then finding really WILD throw rugs?

(Personally, I love the green to the left of your purple).

Rust or something similar may work well with that color scheme.

Personally, I would go with a warm neutral color for the carpet, then brighten up the decor and furnishings with the wild stuff. I am NEVER happy with the way I have my furniture and move it around at least once a month. Home decor is the same way. In the winter, I want warm and cozy, like victorian flower garden that is dark and romantic. In the spring and summer, I want wild batiks and bright colored sarongs on the tables and hanging from couch backs. In the fall, I tone it down. Keep in mind that once that carept is in, it STAYS. Changing the decor is easier.

lotsafuzz, I like the green too, several shades of it but my daughter picked a shade for her room and asked me not to use green because she wants her room to be special. I got no problem with that because I liked the purplish shades more anyway.

xardon, I think rust ends up looking very orange in a large space and I want to limit orange to a few pieces or glass and this one sunset type painting I did.

Oh! Did I mention I have a 50s red couch I'm not parting with! It a nice texured blend and looks like rocky moutain faded jeans red. Beautiful shape and it basically the only nice piece of furniture I own.

edited to ditch a ? and replace with a !

I used to have a rug just a shade lighter than the orchid bloom in my old bedroom and it went well with a Bill Blass Violets bedspread and pale lavender walls. However, I think other rooms may be a bit trickier to match.

My SIL's house is entirely carpeted in dark forest green. It seemed strange at first, but so many colors go with it...burgundy, navy blue, tan, gray, gold, etc.

I like to mix red with grays and rich wood tones. I can't picture the couch with the dark plum, though. A neutral color does seem to be best, IMO, Maybe a soft gray with just a hint of lavender.

The texture of the carpet is important, too. The one you've chosen seems a bit too shaggy. The uniformity of color is distorted by the long fibers. A shorter pile in the same color, maybe just a little lighter, may do the trick.

Do you know what type of floor you have under the carpet now in place?

Don't know yet xardon, tomorrow my Dad and I were going to rip out the carpet and assess the damage (soft spots around both bathrooms)
but the closing was delayed because of the title work. aaaaaaaargh

I am betting they are just pine floors.

Hi KRS, ok you can say blue, but ya can't make me get blue! Gray sucks too according to me.

I'm never going to figure this out am I? I like peach even, but, and it's a big BUT; peach will show every little smudge of dirt. I like pink only very very sparingly in accent so thats out.

Hi Kel, My instinct is to say go with the wild plum - because I love that color. But, if you want to keep the red couch it could clash and spoil the look you're after. Can you take a cushion to the store or warehouse with you so that you can hold it next to a larger swatch and see if it works?

How much natural light comes into the room? A dark floorcovering can really darken a room unless you've already got a good amount of light coming in.

I like Xardon's idea of a commercial grade with a pattern. That might get you a nice splash of color without overpowering the room.

Some department stores and places like Sherwin William (paint store) will send a decorator out free of charge to give you tips, etc. Of course they hope you'll buy some paint or something from them. But, I worked for S.W. as a decorator in the 70's (so many moons ago) and I never minded going out to help people. It got me out of the store. If you've got anything like that around you I'd recommend calling them. As a rule, most enjoy helping new home owners.

Well if they are pine floors, you might consider refinishing. Southern Pine can be very durable and it's really nice when finished. You will also have a lot more leeway in selecting throw or area rugs. Nothing looks more gallerylike than wood floors and designer white walls.

What you don't want to find under the carpet is plywood. But even then you could consider Pergo or some other laminate flooring in lieu of carpet. With the right lighting, laminates can look great. This month's Consumer Reports has a nice section on wood floors. The cost can be comparable to carpet, especially if you, or someone you know, can install it.

The living room has only two windows, so not much light. The thing is, to save money they tell me I have to pick one color for the whole house. Fine with me except the kids rooms will be the color they want. The rest of the house needs to be one style.

I'm going to end up with berber aren't I

I appreciate you guys very much. Thank you for helping me.

I guess I'll sleep on it and hope the answer will come to one of us

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck Kel. Think about the Pergo idea too though. My sister put it in her house and I was amazed by how much it brought out the colors in her living room. She said it was a breeze to install - and she's not really inclined toward that kind of thing. IOW, if she can do it anyone can do it.

xardon,

I don't think I can afford the flooring you are talking about. I will look into it tho, it sounds very nice!

krs,

you are a joy.

mybidness,

I could do it, but I bet it's higher than I can afford.

Gnight y'all.
