I've only read the first few posts to this thread so I don't know what you decided but this green dragon says

DO THE WILD PLUM!! enjoy it, revel in it, do carpet angels on it---just do!!

You will feel so warm and cosy in there---buy it for you and yours and damn the resell isue.

LOL
So THAT'S why he was so concerned about the colour compatibility of puke stains.

Hi Beth and Zazzie and everybody else.

Now I must defend myself. I certainly did NOT say you should consider resale values first and foremost. Just that it might be ONE issue to consider, NOT the deciding factor. And it also depends on how long you expect to be there. Although I'm sure you don't know how long it will be, I'd say resale value would carry more weight if you only planned to be there for a couple of years than if you expected to be there 10 years.

In fact, I said you could consider all these things, and then throw them out the window. The bottom line will come down to your gut feeling. I figured the plum was already decided, and that you wanted people to talk you into it, or were trying to talk yourself into it. I wanted you to have some more things to consider (confuse you maybe ) before you could be comfortable in your decision. Now at least you can say that you thought about all these issues before you made up your mind (never mind if you ignored most of them, you DID think about them. LOL)

Excellent points Beth. I agree that a continuity of colour schemes throughout the house can make for a nice effect.

I probably have more to say, but I can't remember what it was. I'm falling asleep, so I'll have to defend myself some more tomorrow.

Don't mean to be a wet blanket, but ... I like the wild plum color, however, what size rooms are you putting it in. It is going to really make areas look smaller. It may not show dirt as easily as a lighter carpet, but every little piece of fuzz and lint will jump out at you.

You are a go wild with the color statement person so doesn't that mean in three or four years you may want to totally change your colors? If so, a neutral color carpet lets you change your decor at any time.

Have you considered making a miniature model room? Take a cardboard box and put that color on the floor and make a little cardboard couch, etc. It won't be the same, but will give you a bit better idea of how it will look. BTW, carpet people have always told me you are not supposed to put rugs on carpet because it needs to breath.

As far as being cheaper to go with the same color; why is that? You pay so much per yard and have waste no matter how many different kinds of carpet you select.

Just giving you my 2 cents worth.

Packer111, "As far as being cheaper to go with the same color; why is that? You pay so much per yard and have waste no matter how many different kinds of carpet you select."

You are correct that carpet is sold and paid for by the square yard, and that is exactly why it is more economical to use one color throughout. Here's an example:

Carpet comes in standard width, usually 12' (or 4 yards across). And for the sake of the example, let's say that the cost is $10 per square yard. Suppose you are carpeting two areas:

1) a room which is 8' X 10'
2) a hall which is 4' X 12'

In the first example, you're going to carpet the room in red, and the hall in blue. You will have to purchase a piece of carpet which is 9' X 12' to do the red room (nearest multiple of yards X the standard roll width). This is 12 sq. yds. and will cost $120 (at $10/sq. yd.). For the blue hall, you will have to purchase a piece of carpet which is 6' X 12'. This is 8 sq. yds. and will cost you $80. Total of the two pieces of carpet (one red and one blue)= $200.

Now, if you were doing both areas in one color, you would need to purchase a single piece of carpet which is 12' X 12', or 16 sq. yds., at a cost of $160.

In either case, you will still have waste, but in the second scenario, there is less cost to begin with, and also less waste. The more distinct areas you do with one color, the more you save over the cost of carpeting each area in a different color, since you must typically buy carpeting by the even square yard.

Make sense?

Snarky, boy I sure didn't mean to put you on the defensive! I definitely agree that a lot of factors should be considered, and you've brought up some great ones!

Ken, hope you didn't burn too much when you crashed.

Beth

Peach and pink show every tiny dirt particle and light blue isn't much better. Grey doesn't hide as much as you might think it would. Dark green and maroon hide things pretty well as I would imagine your purple might.

we leased an office recently that has the deepest, plushest-looking "royal" purple carpeting anyone we know has ever seen. i had never seen anything like it before. everyone who sees it loves it. we have grey marble tile in the reception area and grey and black furniture in the office. the walls are a light grey and there is grey crown molding with touches of purple throughout. it may be too "dark" for a home. a red couch would definitely not look good with this color scheme, however.

I really really really appreciate all the advice!

I have developed an image in my head now and I will make it work. I am going with the plum AND keeping my red couch without a cover and I'll make it work too. I'll show it here when I'm done.

I know what y'all mean about changing my mind on color but I figure that when I want to change I'll get new furniture in different colors. See this place is bad for antiques and art glass, but it's to die for for getting a 50 dollar couch any day of the week. And I LOVE changing my furniture!

If I'm bored with red purple cranberry (just got a cranberry lamp for cheap) I'll go with other accesories in other colors that will work with my carpet.

I'm having a freakin ball!!!!!!!!!

Gotta go look for a totally far out lamps for my daughters.

If you have to pick one color for the whole house I would pick a boring neutral color in a commercial carpet and then put a bright exciting area rug on top of it. The make seperating grids that are like a fishnet and keep the two flat to each other.
When you are tired of the rug in a year and a half or two out it goes and in comes something new.
Some of the oriental rugs have real bright splashes of color also. And there are area rugs with sculted shapes.
If anything happens and you need to sell sooner than you thought - say you get a job offer or you company wants you to transfer
it will be hard to sell the house with plum carpet. But hey if you do it you will have what you want for as long as you are there. More power to ya.
We put plunbing in a house for a fellow who had his first high paying job out of college and put red and yellow plumbing fixtures - red and gold counter tops. The carpeting was bright green and patterned. They mixed wall paper(flock) with painting in the same rooms.

Then his company transfered him. The house sat for a year and a half until they put in white fixtures painted and tore all the carpet out and the red counter tops. Sold in a couple weeks. The company actually paid because they had a contract to buy his house if it did not sell in 90 days.
