just a word of warning for the newbie,it is for your own good-
"Lying is forbidden in Iraq. President Saddam Hussein will tolerate nothing but truthfulness as he is a man of great honor and integrity. Everyone is encouraged to speak freely of the truths evidenced in their eyes and hearts

We old guards on this board are serious in upholding such high standards.

Stop - you and that quote are beginning to remind me of a kid with a favorite blanket - you take it everywhere whether it's appropriate or not. Of course you know that silence was also a revered behavior in Iraq as well right?

Stop - glad you finally discovered it - if you would stop scolding everyone and scaring the newbies you would have found it a month ago when they were crashing servers on a daily basis.

My favorite is....
We have destroyed 2 tanks, fighter planes, 2 helicopters and their shovels - We have driven them back.

toasted36 and phawthorne1

From what I've read on these boards while lurking, I don't recall any great unkindness when pointing out errors in spelling and/or grammar. Perhaps people feel that simply pointing out errors is unkind, but I hope it can be looked on that as more of an educational opportunity with no malice intended (sort of like telling a woman her slip is showing).

It's sad that the school systems in the country have failed to address this problem, because someone's poor spelling or grammar skills can have a direct impact on his or her earning power. I know there are many intelligent people who simply have problems with this, but the written word is often someone's first impression of you. Would you show up to an interview in torn jeans and a soiled shirt? Well, having a poor command of the English language (spelling, grammar, punctuation usage) can be viewed, unfortunately, as a measure of intelligence or quality of schooling (i.e. did someone go to a really bad school, was he a lazy student, etc.?).

One of the best things about computers is the spell check or grammar check feature in word processing programs. I realize that it's a bit silly to go through that to post on a message board, but I have seen MANY, MANY errors in eBay listings. I have gotten some huge bargains because a key word has been misspelled and so didn't show up in conventional searches.

Please know that I'm not trying to attack you or anyone who has a problem in this area. I had the good fortune to have parents who spoke very well and were supportive with my schoolwork, but I realize that many were not so lucky. If someone knows he/she has a problem, it probably would be a good idea to buy reference books to help. BTW "English Grammar for Dummies" and "Misspeller's Dictionary" are both available on half.com.

Good topic.....All lurkers are welcome. The more the merrier. On a discussion board it's good to have different points of view. I personally don't single out new posters to be picked on, and I don't see that habit in most of the regulars. I have been known to pick on newbies and regulars both for a variety of things, one of which is poor grammar. But the main thing is it's all done with a sense of humor and a good heart towards all. I wish you all well, from the lurkers to fluffy, and everything in between. Let's have fun, learn from each other, and be well.

Bad spelling and bad grammer don't bother me here but I stand by my belief that if someone has a website they should try to correct it on the pages if they want to compete with everyone else in the world. I agree with lurkyloo that it's the first impression that counts.

Hi to all the lurkers that jumped in. It's nice to see some new faces. We all get along just fine here, right Twelvepole?

Wow, very nice to "meet" the Invisible Ones...so cool...just like a Star Trek episode where they discover a new and highly-intelligent life form that previously did not show up on their scanners. Once Giordi reversed the polarity, there they were! (I'm babbling about this website: http://tinyurl.com/bnij It just tickled my funny bone.)

Anyway, welcome to all. Sure hope to hear more from you.

I'd just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who participates in this forum. I am an eBay buyer and have found the information posted here to be very helpful and insightful. Understanding what you sellers go through to list an item (the research involved, taking and editing photos, etc.) and see the transaction through to completion (particularly when having to deal with less-than-happy customers) gives me a much greater appreciation for what you do on a daily basis to make your online business a success. Hats off to each and every one of you!
