There you go, Roadsmith, you used the word "haunting" in your title. Congrats on the bids for that album. Bet you're excited. It's always the things I think might be a waste of my time to list that do the best for me. You go girl!

The counters aren't great but they are a hell of a lot better than nothing. Wouldn't you rather have some input, no matter how vague, than none?

I get input every day. It comes into my PayPal account, my P.O. Box...

Maybe it would help me understand if you could give a few actual examples of auctions and how you interpreted the hit count.

Classical records can go for ALOT of dough as this auction illustrates.

It all depends on rarity and condition.

Cheryl: It honestly didn't occur to me that "haunting" would bring looks! I thought you guys were kidding around about words like "ghost" etc. in your titles. We listened to this record before listing it, and the music truly is haunting. Too funny.

Fluffy: The only way the counters help me is if an auction has, say, 0 - 10 bids by the last three days (of 7-day auctions). Then I frequently will take a hard look at the title, description, pictures, and especially the opening price to see if something needs changing.

roadsmith: With all due respect, I'm not disputing that folks make inferences from counter data.

I'm disputing the assumption that the inferences are valid, especially given the lack of any other corroborating information.

You gave an example earlier of classical music on LPs; you thought they probably wouldn't go well on eBay. If an item gets only 0-10 hits in the first four days and the reason is that the item is not desirable, changing the title or description won't help.

I recently offered a souvenir spoon of a famous naval event. Started it at 1 cent. It got no bids. I don't know how many hits it got since I don't use counters, but what inference can I draw if there were, say, 25 hits? How about if it got 100 hits? How about 0?

I think I'm going to set up a test seller's ID and use counters on all the auctions so you folks can tell me what the hit counts mean.

Okay, now I'm getting totally paranoid about the 400+ hits on this Cher record. (I hesitate to post this for fear it generates even more hits, but I must.)

My overheated brain is saying that someone on another site has decided my auction is really stupid and has suggested all his friends look at it. Please, everyone, tell me this is odd. Surely this many bids don't happen to you, without a single bid, and no hints as to why the lookers aren't bidding?

Now remember roadsmith all the posters in vendio have visited that auction and that may account for a lot of your hits. Cher is very popular and I imagine there are a lot of collectors out there and are looking at your auction. They want to get the auction for as cheap as possible so they don't want to start the bidding because once that happens everyone else will have to bid but if it is snipped it won't go so high. Sometime snipping is good, that is when it has a lot of bids, but then snipping is bad where there are no bids and they get it for the listing price.

Okay, now I'm getting totally paranoid about the 400+ hits on this Cher record.

Rather than an evil conspiracy or a hole in the time/space fabric, isn't it more likely that hits that occurred both before and after you posted here are largely due to Vendio readers?

You do, after all, use your eBay id here.

You wanted to know why it got hits. Well, each of us has to look at it to try to figure that out. I've been back to that auction three times myself.

A few things to consider.

1) Less buyers on ebay (it could be a handful of people checking on it over and over). Sniper Season is Open.

2) Possible over saturation of Cher music.

3) LPs-not everyone still listens to them, and most people would have to be a Cher collector.

4) Song list- people check to see if it has the songs they want, and if not they buy Greatest Hits #1.

Have you ever listed something on ebay and got no bids and thought it was not a desirable item on ebay but relisted anyway and got a lot of bids and a high price? It happens all the time on ebay.

I like Cher.
But I'm afraid to say I wouldn't bid on this album, for it certainly is not her very best!

Chances are though it will sell at the end.

Surely you have your counter option set for one number only per individial viewer ID? That should reflect over 400 separate viewers. First time I clicked, it was at 125. I've gone back twice, but the subsequent views wouldn't raise the hits.

I see you added I TAKE PAYPAL in Location as you said you might. Good idea. Will catch the eye when new page format appears. I'm still sitting on the fence, wanting PayPal's logo and payment option in red print showing atop page, yet not wanting to activate eBay Checkout. Can't have it both ways, so I may just take the plunge, activate it and ignore any communication via eBay's (optional) Checkout.

Good luck with Cher! If you don't get a buyer, maybe you'll receive an award for the most hits without a bid?

Beachbound here only...

auctionace, I listed a Cartier Purse. In my lising I gave all the characteristics including the date that was in the purse. I said I did not know if it was authentic or not. It received 132 hits with no bids. I relisted it with a $30.00 start and a BIN at $50.00. I knew this purse was a good purse, very expensive but also listed were new Cartier Purses with all the paper work and junk that goes with a authentic one at $900.00 Well I received a $30.00 bid and she took away the BIN and the bidding started and ended up at $123.00 and the original bidder was the winner. When she left feed back she started beautiful purse and authentic also. I think the purse probably originally sold for $500.00

That's the nature of ebay. One time you list an item an no interest or bids and a month later you list the same exact auction and it gets a lot of bids and a high price. Ebay is a friggin' casino.

In case there's anyone left out there who *isn't* sick of this thread I started, here's an update. The album sold for $6.49, last minute of course. I e-mailed the buyer, and this is what she responded with, in answer to my standard survey about how the buyer searched--category or keyword.

"Hi, I am happy to know that you ship the same day the payment arrives.
I can assure you the check is good; I wish MORE EBAYERS were as kind and
generous as you are

As for your questions, here are my answers. Ihope they are what you
were looking for. For the first question--reguarding the 450 "hits"--I
have no clue why more people did not bid on it after that many views. I
found the record, about one week ago, and I began to watch that item.
As for me, personally, I don't like to bid on the item the first day I
found it, for instance like five or four days. I bid on records,
usually, right before they start to end. I count down and bid during
the last few minutes. As I am sure, you already know. I WAS SO
SURPRISED when I hit 'refresh' and it said sparini was the winner. I
don't know what is going on with the hits, but I am so happy I won it--I
hope I am not too conceited. I just went and looked at the hits on the
item and it said like 552! I can not believe no other people bid on the
item. I never would have known about this record if wasn't for the $30
CHER programs, or books, that are sold at her concerts. Being
fortunate, I was able to see CHER live in concert on June 18 in
Billings, Montana, yet I did spend $95 on Cher merchandise--the way I
look at it, it's her Farewell Tour, so I wanted some memrobila from the
event. I loved the concert, she is such a wonderful singer. However,
after the concert my aunt was asking me what albums do you have and
which ones don't you have--she was looking at the back page where it
showed pictures of her album covers throghout the years. I showed her
the five I didn't have and this one. I thought, at that moment, I am
going to look for this one on eBay. I am glad I did. Another thing is
that I am so glad that the record itself and shipping are reasonalbe
prices. I hat when it is $8 to ship one record...I believe it is
rediculos. (DON"T Pay attention to my spelling errors or grammar
errors )

As for the other questions, here I go. I will list your question and
then my answer.

> Do you recall how you first came upon this auction of mine?
>
>> Were you generally searching in a CATEGORY? Or were you doing a
>> KEYWORD SEARCH
>
I first came across your item because I typed in CHER LP in the
keywords section. I then went and clicked on newly listed and looked
from there. I was surpriesed to see the album on here! I only look
under keywords for anything that I buy here on ebay. I have never, in
my year and four months, looked for anything under categories. I find
the keyword search to be much easier to find certain items. I hope that
helps yoou."

Time to stick a fork in this one, right?!

Yep! I have to admit I looked at your auction a couple of times - once because you asked us to and another time or two to see how high the counter got..bet I am not the only one who did this..once you asked people here to "look at your auction" you cannot expect the counter to have any meaning whatsoever! I wonder how many people read these threads anyway!?

are you sure all of those eyeballs are actually eyeballs. I know alot of spammers use harvesting bots to get emails and one of the ripest places on the net are message boards and ebay. It's probably not as bad since they stop letting you use your email address as a user id. I'd bet alot of views are bots serving the page.
