I have been selling on eBay for 5-1/2 years. Was pretty much a full-time job for awhile ('97-'00); now is part time (at least the income is!) due to the poor economy.
When I receive payment from a buyer, I acknowledge it immediately via email. I also leave them positive feedback at that time. Ship date for their item is included in the wording of the feedback.
When I ship their item, I email them again, tell them that it's shipping, and via what method (Priority Mail, Parcel Post, Media Mail, UPS, Pony Express, whatever).
This helps head off a lot of the repetitive "have you gotten may payment?" and "where's my stuff?" emails. At least that's been my experience. Yours may vary.
If I were selling in mass quantities like some PowerSellers, I am sure I would not be able to give this kind of personal service.

Hi Buffalowoman, You may be a very nice person but I personally think your NUTS to spend this much time and Blah, Blah, Blah, over a 10 cent deal. My goodness, MOVE ON WOMAN and get a LIFE. ALL YOU BUYERS HAVE TO REMEMBER IS TO BUY FROM THE PROS. PEOPLE WITH A WORK RECORD (HIGH FEEDBACKS AND LOW NEGS) AND YOU WILL ALL BE JUST FINE. You all should remember it takes more than Ebay to be a PRO SELLER/DEALER. It takes years of hard honest work.
