Not sure what the correlation is, I've had plenty of rude sellers who are not powersellers, and plenty of powersellers who are nice. I'm a powerseller, but not for long as they will revoke it because I take 6 weeks off ebay this time of year to travel. I try to respond to every email, and don't consider myself rude.

Sorry if I offended powersellers here.

In the past week, I've emailed three different ones about their items -- no replies at all. VERY annoying.

If you're too busy to properly manage your business, then you should list less so tha you can do your job properly.

peiklk,

Are you running any SPAM filters on your e-mail account? It is VERY possible that these people are e-mailing you back, and your SPAM filter on your computer... or your e-mail ISP provider... is filtering out the messages. This is becoming an increasingly large problem... and will only get worse as SPAM grows to approximately 70% of all e-mail messages sent.

Time to vent.

People, please use the meat computer between your ears when your email is not responded to.

What is more likely: 1) that a seller is ignoring you and doesn't want your money or 2) that they just never got your email?

We sellers want to make money. It might give you a warm glow of self-righteous satisfaction to decide on scant evidence that the seller just has too much on his plate...but odds are your email was blocked.

Food for the meat computer:

AOL routinely and silently blocks email from competing ISPs. There are a number of news articles on this; here's one about AOL blocking email from Earthlink:

http://www.capeeconomy.com/spring2001/spam_0401.shtml

AOL is also known to block email from Comcast and RoadRunner. We suspect they are blocking email from RCN, as well. RCN is our cable provider. Obviously, Earthlink, Comcast, RoadRunner and RCN are all AOL's competitors.

Actual data from one small study done to see which ISPs are blocking and how much:

http://austin.bizjournals.com/austin/stories/2003/08/11/daily14.html

I've got a ton of these articles on file; I won't blast you with all of them here. I started keeping news articles around after encountering the astonishing level of denial from AOL users: "AOL doesn't block any email!" more than one has told me.

Industry pundits have already predicted that email will be made all but unusable in the near future as legitimate businesses are caught in the crossfire between spammers and anti-spammers.

What am I doing about the problem? The only thing I can: cancelling bids from AOL users. I see no other solution.

Again, AOL is crap! I couldn't be happier to be rid of AOL. How I survived it for 5 years I'll never know.

I don't think it matters if you are a powerseller or not. There are nice sellers and there are rude sellers. I don't think it's fair to classify them. I'm not a powerseller and have no desire to be. I try to let my bidders know when their item has shipped, but I don't always have time. I do make a concerted effort to let a buyer know their money has arrived. If I forget to send an email, it's not deliberate.

Yes, I have some spam filters, but it COULD be that he's using sexual terms in his replies to me, but I doubt it.

I am NOT an AOL user (and thankfully got my Mom off this too).

Oh well. A couple of people lost bids (and Buy it nows) because I couldn't get simple answers.

I think a lot of the Power Sellers are simply overrun with email questions and tasks that pretain to selling on ebay. They simply chose not to answer the email questions to avoid spending an extra hour or two per day on ebay tasks. The slight advantage from this tendency may go to the small sellers that have a small selling volume that allows them the time to answer the email questions.

Hmmmm.... you have spam filters... you don't get replies from three different sellers.... and you think they're the problem??? Must be nice to live in such a righteous world.

My experience is that most people don't have a CLUE how spam filters work! That's why when I train people how to use e-mail (part of my RL job)... I always tell them NOT to use them, unless they're willing to miss receiving potentially important e-mails! Add over-used filters on the User end to all the mis-identified SPAM that the average ISP blocks now... it's a wonder we get ANY e-mails! I'm definately with fluffy on this one!

Well, from experience in this thread, you don't have a CLUE about not jumping to conclusions.

I know how they work and I know what they are set to. As I indicated, my filters (self set) are for sexual messages. So, yes. IF they are replying to me with sexual offers, I won't get them.

eauctionmgnt, you're the one who is self-righteous -- at least from appearances here.

I can see where you'd make the mistake and assume everyone is as dumb as the group you support.

You're forgiven for your mistake.

Peiklk,

When I post messages to this board... it is always in an attempt to help others by sharing knowledge I have obtained... or to seek out those who might have knowledge I am lacking. Rather than becoming prejudiced against power sellers as your "I hope I'm never a powerseller and become rude to my customers statement" seems to indicate, you'd be better off to come up with ways to FIX your problems. The odds are not in your favor... it is not likely that THREE different sellers would just ignore a potential customer. It is much more likely something on your end. You really ought to re-visit your spam filters... (even if you set them up to protect against sexual content, you could inadvertantly be blocking domains). If that still doesn't work... you probably should check with your ISP and find out what filters THEY run before the mail gets to your account. Regardless... you should probably stop blaming others, spreading stereotypes, and in general being as rude as the very people you dislike dealing with. You'd be a much happier person for it. Good luck.

eauctionmgnt...

Again, it is YOU jumping to conclusions and stereotypes. I know how my email works, I've been a beta tester for the package for many, many years. So before you presume to be "helping" (when you're not) by attacking the messenger, give others the benefit of the doubt that they might just be as smart as yourself.

The fact remains that this past week, I tried to contact THREE different power sellers with questions and none of them responded. All *MY* customers were able to get through to me. All the questions I asked of other sellers got through.

Now, it COULD BE that something is wrong on their end -- that they are blocking messages sent from ebay servers -- why I do not know. But the bottom line is that for whatever reason, I sent them messages -- they have not sent replies.

Choice A) They are too busy to answer questions or Choice B) They are blocking emails.

My ISP is me, BTW. My web provider (on which I have my domains) does not block anything.

Again, I do appreciate that you were trying to help. However, your nasty attitude killed any help that others might have gotten from your replies. You won't admit (even to yourself) your mistake in this matter, so let's just end it here. Amazingly, you have a powerseller attitude.

Pieklk,

I'm very sorry that you haven't found the information I have shared useful. Without knowing your situation to begin with, I am only able to post solutions for the common problems. If my posts to you seem a little brash, it is only because I become frustrated when someone seems to have the attitude "I never do something wrong.. it must be the other guy's fault". I see this too often in life, and truly think that if people took more responsibility for their actions... then we would live in a better world. Now... before you get upset... I'm NOT saying this is necessarily you... but this is certainly the impression I received from your initial posts.

Now... to get back to your problem... I think we've got enough intelligent people at this board to help you. When trouble-shooting a problem... you need to look at all the possible scenarios. You've already mentioned a few:

A) They are too busy to answer questions
B) They are blocking your e-mails

But... there are also a few other scenarios

C) Their ISP is blocking your e-mails
D) Your SPAM filters are blocking their e-mails

Since you're running your own ISP and your web-provider doesn't block anything... we'll leave those out. Obviously... there are two options that you can't do a thing about (A and B). However, if the issue is C or D, you might be able to prevent this from happening again.

If the problem is C, you should be concerned. If an ISP is blocking your e-mails, that means that somewhere along the line, your domain could have gotten on their SPAM list. This would obviously be bad... because you would no longer be able to send e-mails to ANYONE on their domain. However, these are usually simple mis-understandings that can be resolved by contacting the ISP, asking them if you are on their SPAM list, asking them why, and petitioning them to remove you so that your legitmate messages can get through.

Then, there's still the possiblility that the problem could be issue D. Now... I know that you're pretty certain that your SPAM filters are not stopping legitimate e-mail. But, you should make absolutely sure that this is the case. First, do your messages get automatically deleted, or do they get dumped in a junk e-mail folder? If they're in a folder... you might want to review them to see if the missing replies are stuck in there. If not, you might want to go over your SPAM filters with a fine-tooth comb. Without knowing which program and what kind of SPAM filters you're using, I can't be of much more help. But, I can illustrate an example of a legitimate e-mail that could be filtered out due to miscontrued sexual content:

Dear Bidder,

Thank you for your interest in the computer keyboard I have on auction. This hard to find model includes a spill-proof cover which provides protection from wet spills. The measurements of this item is 8 inches wide by 22 inches long. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions,

Dick Jones

Now.... this message certainly doesn't have any sexual meaning to us people... but many spam filters would see these words "hard, model, wet, 8 inches, long, dick". And probably, most spam filters would then falsely identify this message as being spam. The thing to remember is that with any SPAM filter there is a margin of error. Just as I'm sure that there are certain SPAM messages that do make it through... statistically, there should be an equal number of legitimate messages that do not make it through. The margin plays both sides.

Anyhow... without knowing more details of your situation... I can't provide you with any more help. But, I do hope that this post may have at least pointed out a few things you may have overlooked - and hopefully utimately help resolve your problem.

See, eauctionmgt, if you'd taken the time to make your suggestions in a COURTEOUS manner the first time, it would have saved everyone a lot of hassle.

Instead of making rash assumptions that the evidence didn't support, offer your suggestions with humility, not insults.

True, we don't know each other -- and time on this board and value of input cannot always be gauged. So yes, I took offense at your implication that I was some newbie idiot. Had I even suspected that there was a problem on my end, I would never consider posting here and putting the blame on the sellers. However, you don't know that and jumped to the wrong conclusions.

The fact remains, with 100% confidence, that these sellers never responded to my requests. That is the problem that was posted about. I wasn't posting that I had never received replies -- but that they never took the time to respond.

As for bootclan's comment. He's just being an ass for his own sake. Not even attempting to offer anything helpful and responding to that which he has no grasp of understanding.

peiklk,

If you take the time to read the thread... you will notice that my first post WAS quite courteous with nothing but a helpful suggestion. It was only your continued antangonistic comments (which keep on coming...) that have caused my posts to obtain an edge. If you look at other posts to this thread.. you'll notice that I am not the only one who has taken offense to your attitude. Maybe you should heed your own advice and post in a courteous manner... rather than making rash assumptions that the evidence didn't support such as "I hope I'm Never a power seller and become RUDE to my customers".

I stand corrected... It wasn't your first reply that was rude, but your followup...

"Hmmmm.... you have spam filters... you don't get replies from three different sellers.... and you think they're the problem??? Must be nice to live in such a righteous world."

That was where the trouble started.

Oh well.

Kiara -- The main problem is that no "help" was requested. What started out as a simply tongue-in-cheek venting thread on three powersellers who never replied has turned into a rude attack on the messenger. Yes, I've defended myself and maybe should not have returned rudeness for rudeness. But that was it. In reality no help has been given because none was necessary.

And again, I apologize for lumping all powersellers into the same boat. I'm sure there are an equal ratio of non-powersellers who fail to reply to their customers as well. It's just that I (and maybe I shouldn't) expect more from someone who carries that PS title. So their offense stands out a little more in my mind.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone and let's just let this thread die.
