Lattefore2--I remember Freemdom Land-it was in the Bronx right off I-95-where co-op city is.The amusement park was shaped like the United States.I never went there, but went by there on the way to the 64 Worlds Fair-the same year they built Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played in Aug of 65.

TraderJones was already taken, so since there are two of us Joneses anyway, we decided that Traders would do. Even though all my EOA emails always spell out "TradersJones (Traders with an "s"", I still get many folks sending their PayPal payments to Trader the singular.
Now I'm jonesing for a new name.
So, Micmic, what's up wit' YOUR name?

Thanks, greatlakes. I'll be going to mapquest to get a fix on just where this Palisades Park shangrila heaven-on-earth really was! It's unbelievable to me that there is an actual street name in that quaint little place!

I chose zircon4 because I am a gemcutter and I love zircons. They are really sparkly and have great fire when they are cut right. The 4 is because, according to ebay 1, 2, and 3 were already taken. Though I have never seen them in use.

Zircon4: Could we talk about zircons for a moment, please? I see them, plus Diamonique on QVC, advertised on TV. I've never knowingly gazed on one of these diamond substitutes. Are they truly impossible to tell from diamonds? Are they cheap looking? etc. Just curious here.

Hi Roadsmith,
Natural zircons that are properly cut look very diamond like. The colours are also diamond like. I find that the coloured cubic zirconia (Diamonique) is unnnatural looking. But even cz can look very realistic. An investigative reporter took a 2Ct, D colour, Internally flawless dimond and a professionally cut white cz the same size to a whole bunch of jewellers on Fifth avenue and asked them to tell which was which without using their electronic testers. Only about half got it right. Natural zircons are very different from the man made cz however. They have their own personality. Natural zircons also show double refraction. If you look very closely inside them you will notice that the facet edges in the culet(bottom) appear to double up. It makes them look a bit fuzzy or out of focus. The picture below shows this very well.

Adrian

Thanks for the little lesson in zircon, CZ, etc., Adrian! I'd never heard of natural zircon; where is it found? Is it fairly common? And I think I understand that CZ, cubic zirconium, is man-made; is that correct? I've assumed that for years.

Hi Adele,
You are most welcome! Natural zircon is fairly common. It shows up in most alluvial gemstone wash. Australia, Africa, Sri Lanka, Burma, Vietnam, and so on, you get the idea. It is also a major component of heavy mineral sand. It has a far higher specific gravity(density) than diamond. Diamond is 3.41, Zircon is 4.5 approx. CZ is denser again, at around 5.8. What this means in useful terms is that a zircon will be heavier that a diamond of the same diameter. ie, a 6.5mm diamond weighs approx 1Ct. A 6.5mm zircon weighs approx 1.4Cts. CZ is most certainly man made. I guess my favourite thing about zircons is their fire. In sunlight they have fire that will rival a diamond. The other bonus is that the pink colours are almost identical to the pink diamonds and have just as much fire. Only the price is far more acceptable.

Adrian

Hi Japerton,
Well, I had an uncle that got me involved young. I cut my first cabochon when I was 5 years old under the watchful eye of my uncle. I have enjoyed finding and cutting stones ever since. About 8 years ago I was taught how to facet and found out that I had a natural flair for it. So now I work from home and can be with my two little girls (3 and almost 2) 24/7. Couldn't ask for much more really.
