Roadsmith: Yo uare absolutely right. My religion does some very crazy things along with all the others.
Wars are not caused by religion -- they are caused by intolerance, greed and other things. I can't help but think that if religion didn't exist, people would just find some other reason to go to war.

There's a generally-held belief that no matter what the superficial reason, wars are caused by population pressure.

Pelorus: I"m afraid you're right--that people would indeed find another reason for war. ("We need a war every few years to test our new weapons systems," -- U.S. General, a few years back.)
And, fluffy, I truly do believe that wars and indeed many of the other ills on our planet are caused by overpopulation. And getting worse by the day, too. If we look at air pollution, water pollution, illegal immigration, crime, disease--all would be better if we didn't keep breeding like rabbits on this planet. This is one of the many reasons we've supported Planned Parenthood over the years and why I worked for them for 3 years a long time ago. We also support the morning-after pill, birth control for 3rd world countries, etc.
And, not to beat a dead horse, but there are a few religions I could name here but won't which encourage large families and even, in the case of the Mormon church, reward them because they're giving bodies to the souls waiting up there in the ether to be born. There has never been a prophet or sub-leader in that church who is childless, and most of them have 5 - 10 children. The role model to their young men is clear--to rise in that church and therefore earn bigger rewards in heaven, one needs to have proved his manhood and fathered a litter of children.
End of rant.
