I'm confused about something. If an item of jewelry is marked 14K, is it not okay to say it's 14K? Something in a previous post here seemed to indicate the contrary?

Roadsmith, I think the item in question is is 14kt gold plated? Not 14kt?

Cheryl, my guess is your buyer is not new or foreign but saw this as a chance to take you up on something. I think those types of buyers will always be out there, too.

I had started a thread a while back about being totally honest in the title. Well, it seems the majority think it's okay to stretch it a bit. So, I didn't add EP in the title. There wasn't space for another letter in the title and since it seems to be a common practice. . .if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Now, teach, in YOUR OWN WORDS (lest you forget):

"It is perfectly acceptable to use the word "peridot" in a title and then explain in the description that the peridots are synthetic. There is nothing misleading about it. Do note that in eBay item specifics you can specify "peridot" and then choose what kind of peridot (synthetic, genuine, etc.). So eBay acknowledges that using a gemstone name word alone does not confer gemstone authenticity."

So, IOW, it's perfectly okay to say 14k Gold in the title and 14k Gold Plated in the description. That is, unless you are fluffy and feel you can flip flop around any which way. There was no Item Specifics option in this case. So, which is it, fluffy? It's okay in some cases, but not others? You can choose to do it, but I cannot?

I have not yet heard back from the buyer and I have a feeling I will not. I offered to refund less fees as I was instructed to do. This is not my merchandise I'm selling so I don't set the rules on it. There was another bid so I could second chance it. This bidder bid twice on the item. They had recently bought an item that was Sterling Silver for over $200. What did they expect for $9.99?

Again, knowing very little about good jewelry, I ask another question.

If an item is just 14K gold PLATED, will it say 14K gold PLATED? Otherwise, if it's marked 14K, how could one know which it is?

This has all been very interesting.

IMO, the buyer thinks you are a new seller and can pull one on you. Maybe hoping you will compromise with a partial refund or something.

And something I have suspected about Teach for a long time has been confirmed.

If it were me (and this is one reason why I wouldn't touch selling jewelry with a ten foot pole), I would find a way to fit "EP" in the title - perhaps dump some of the extraneous words..."14K Gold Genuine.." could make one think that the necklace is genuine 14K gold...you might want to make sure that your second chance buyer understands this as well.

Using a stone/color name is one thing - especially when the category describes whether the stone is natural, lab created etc...representing jewelry as 14K gold when it isn't is another thing altogether.

I know I have been surprised when ordering jewelry just how SMALL 2.75 carats is (a big diamond but not so big otherwise!) I wouldn't think of asking for a refund on those grounds though!!

I think you did the right thing by offering a refund.

Forgot to add - I don't the buyer was taking advantage of a new seller - the "me" page says you aren't. I always check "me" pages on new sellers if they have them.

Hmmm
I wish I could see the auction.
BUT
(Everyone has a big but, Simone...)

Diamonds, gold, silver and other constructs of fine jewelry should be clearly marked, explained and measured.
Beads or glass can use the colors.
Synthetic stones are lab/man made. Fake versions are imitation, not synthetic.
Put plate in the title if it's plated.
We've established that bidders don't read.
One seller in another catagory includes a few paragraphs of educational info with his auctions. Guess what? he has bids all the time.
He loves his stuff, and knows it and it shows.
You can guerilla market your wares as gifts all you want, but if you know your shiite, you are up on the competition, too.

On this one, I agree with FWC aka IRT aka WTF

It's not rocket science. Just do a search of completed items with '14k', 'gold', 'garnet', and 'necklace' as the search words. Hint: you have the picture in the OP. I tried to be fancy and used the image URL as the search parameter, but, surprise, you can't search descriptions on completed items.

Is ya positive, as to FWC = IRT, Cheryl? Is it just grammatical usage and elocution style or do you have hard evidence?

I heard back from the buyer. She's decided to keep the necklace because it is exacly what the description said it was after having had someone look at the stones. So, I am assuming it cost her money to have that done. John will do it for me for nothing, but he charges quite a lot to do it for anyone else. Her complaint was that the stones didn't look large enough in person. She knew the chain was plated and that wasn't her complaint. Her other complaint was that she thought there were also garnets in the chain going up the chain. I misunderstood her original email thinking she didn't know it was plated. It was her lack of proper punctuation that caused part of the confusion.

Go do a check on 14k necklace and see exactly how many that are under $25 are actually plated. Excluding plain chains. There are many and I'm sure some of you here have done the same thing with other items. So, let's not all put halos over our heads. Not all of us can be angels.

Can we please put this matter to bed now? My buyer and I have.

Yeah, Cheryl, ye must be careful!

About 6 mos ago, Ralphie became convinced that someone was firetrucking with our auctions & threw a HOUND-HISSY on the kitchen floor!

Pretty sad when folks have nothing better to do with their time than make trouble for others!

That's ONE thing you'd NEVER catch a Boston Terrier doing -- beneath their DIGNITY!

I just love BT's. However, the old ball and chain won't allow me to have anything around here, but a cockateil. Everytime I see a commercial with a BT in it, I whine. Still it does no good.

I bid on one of your auctions. Had to stop because I ran out of money. If the buyer doesn't come through, remember I love Ralphie.
