cripe... fair, or unfair!?
i say 'unfair'! LOL
I found that instruction just now, too, at microsoft .... and i cannot believe how unfortunate i am ... like i said, i have WinXP home edition...
but when *I* click on Start/All Programs/Accesories/System Tools/ THE ONLY OPTIONS SHOWING ON MY TOOLS ARE,
"DISK CLEANUP,
DISK DEFRAG.,
FILES & SETTINGS TRANSFER WIZARD,
HP PAVILION SUPPORT INFO (they're useless
since my 'warranty' is up)
SCHEDULED TASKS,
SYSTEM INFORMATION,
SYSTEM RESTORE"
Hard to believe there is no nuttin' that says, "Back Up" ....
gotta go run a holiday grocery errand ... be back later ... thanks all.

ps tomwii ... my mom and sibs in Jax are having hurricane parties all yesterday, and today too, cuz mom is the ONLY one that has power (i mean electricity) LOL .... they're in the Arlington area ... how's your neighborhood faring?

I tried to run House call before coming over here and even with the Java download it required I still can't run it.
House Call doesn't look like it was downloaded to your PC.
Did you try to run Trojan Hunter ?
Here are some other free on-line scans to try, if you want to.

I don't use Stamps.com anymore and my McAffee is not up to date either. Should I delete those too?
As for Stamps.com, you can remove any reference to it in your HJT log.
I recommend that you keep a fully updated anti virus program running on your PC.
If you're not going to keep McAffee, I suggest you at least get a free anti virus.
Two goods ones are AVG Free Edition and Avast! 4 Home
After you get one, try running it in Safe mode, and let it fix anything it finds.

It takes me over 15 minutes to boot my computer up!
Did you try to follow the suggestions that were recommend in the previous post above?
If not, give that a try. Then post back with a new Hijackthis log, and let us know how you made out.

ARY:
"The Windows XP Backup Utility doesn't come as standard with your operating system and you won't be able to get access it using Add/Remove Windows Components either. You will have to install it manually by inserting the Windows XP disc in the drive and browsing to the following location E:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACK UP (where 'E:' is the letter of your CD drive). Double-click on the file NTBACKUP.MSI to begin the installation. If you're wondering why the Windows XP backup utility is called NTBackup, it's because the actual program is an enhanced version of the same utility that's included with Windows 2000."
Actually, I like this answer better<g>
"Microsoft, in an attempt to protect you from yourself, did not include the same Backup and Restore utility in Windows XP Home Edition as we find in Windows XP Professional Edition. To help protect your system using Windows XP Home, you can use the System Restore Utility to create what is called a "Restore Point." A Restore Point, ideally, is a point at which your computer starts and runs without any errors or problems. "

Okay here is the next log. Hope I did it right.
Thank you again so much for helping me with this. There are things on this computer I never even knew existed.

I also wanted to tell you that out of everything done so far, even without fixing my Outlook, my computer is already running better now than it has in months.
Cool! Looks good so far. I posted your new log, although these 3 I KNOW you can have hijack fix now. Quicktime will always rebuild itself when you need to use it again. Realupdate, well, that's a little bug they install kindof. And I don't think you need Pitstop anymore.
We'll see what else they have to say. I told them to tell me (you!) what else we can take off that we don't need that is slowing you down.
Those above I've unistalled on my own computer....go for it!
While we're waiting to hear, once you've fixed those 3 up there? Then try running clean disc again.
If you have nothing else to do<g> you can try running a little defrag too. So when you start up your computer, go to control panel/display and halt your screen saver temporarily..(none). Then do control/alt/delete and stop everything from running except IE. Then defrag.

Okay I removed those. here is the updated log without those on there.
I actually feel like I'm learning something because I don't have to go back and check the initial directions on how to do this stuff
Thanks again so much

Have windows XP home edition also and do not see Backup - just Systems Restore ( is not that the same as Backup? ) but did create( burn) 6 CD's which are labeled System Recovery following instuctions in manual when I bought this computer. Is this all I will need for backup disks? and when I install the new windows service pack, will I have to use them? Does not seem possible that Microsoft would make this neccessary.

Forget saving the thread McJane, just save the SWI (spyware info) link! That's where I learned everything. That and Spybot and their link page. Which is why I have them on my ME page.
Somewhere over on SWI they have their rule list for those that help people. Their first rule is never ever call anyone stupid or dumb - no matter what. That right there impressed me.
Now we just need copies of W98 and XP. I actually have a copy of 98 somewhere in the Garage sale pile, I really need to find it for my nephews computer.
I can't even find my Toshiba restore disc and I really need to reformat this laptop. I hate to have to use my Kazaa XP disc since then it's a workaround without the Service Pack 1 thing that Microsoft uses to keep everybody from bootlegging copies of it.

Hi glassgrl ... hope you had a good day ... we sure did up here ....
you say:
""Actually, I like this answer better<g>

so, you think if I run my 'install' of this Service Pack 2 thingy, then if i see any problems, i can just run the System Restore? ... I think that is what you are saying? ........
(i still really find it 'dumb' that Bill Gates co. would say 'download this because you need it, but it might reallys screw you up) .....
posted on September 6, 2004 06:23:27 PM new
yeah that was my first thought to begin with, what would be wrong with using good old system restore. But then I know I have downloaded MS updates and then restored and didn't have to go in and redo my updates. So I think they have scripted it as such that the MS downloads are in your machine for good.
OTOH my desktop keeps telling me I need to do this update and I tried to, but then it said I didn't have enough room to download it! Gosh, just how big is this thing? I didn't look to see what my free space is but it should certainly handle an update! So that little icon is still reminding me daily.
So, I don't know what your best option is. You could run system restore.
You could buy a brand new copy of XP.

I wonder if a system restore would help? I'm definitely not an expert but one time the cable company tech walked me through it.
Please, someone come in and verify my instructions.
Here they are: Go to Start, All Programs, System Tools, System Restore. Pick a date a few days back.

If SHE is having problems, we're ALL doomed. LOL ... .......
Goodnight all ... i will try to 'install' my 'service pack 2' tomorrow and see how it goes .... hope it doesn't mess me up, because I have to list a lot of things this week too .... ... "sell sell sell"

sure McJane. We only had one casulty here, a piece of limb fell on one of my flowerpots. I thought about asking my friend in FEMA if I could file on that but thought he might be a little short in the humor department right now. He just got back from Punta Gorda and only because he's attending his daughter's wedding, then he's got to turn around and come back to Florida. Poor guy, he was having to drive 2 HOURS to his hotel room every night.
We had very little wind and it drizzled all day, not even much like rain drizzle but it felt more like heavy fog.
My instructions? Surely you jest. I copied them from the SWI website forum.
Anyway...Helga? Yoo hoo? Here's the latest from them when I told them I didn't have the Windows disc to do repair from.

This service pack2 for XP is huge, I have been told. Took someone over 1 hour to download it and he has DSL.I still have dialup ( I am a cheapskate and do not sell that much on ebay for one thing) I expect I might have an 8 hr. day on this computer downloading it.

glassgrl; thank you for finding out that WinXP Home Edition has a 'built-in' "BackUp" by virtue of its 'Restore' utility ... (I guess we sort of have 'Windows for Dummies LOL) ... AND wouldn't you think the MS website 'help' area would MENTION THAT, instead of stating, 'ok, next step, back up your files' ... sheesh.
----
buyhigh and Tomwii ... thank you for YOUR posts, too ... that assures me, because I was noticing it seems to be a REALLY BIG to-do, as far as how much time it takes to d/l (and i hadn't even attempted to hit 'install' yet) ...

Helga; good luck with your computer 'upgrades' too.

yep ... Service Pack 2, compliments of Microsoft, took about 45 minutes to d/l and install, and that was with cable modem.
I don't see any glitches or lost functions since completing the install. ergo, they had me scared outta me wits fer nuttin'.

I'm sorry for not responding sooner. Had some home issues here last night.
I tried to run the defrag over night and it stopped midway telling me to shut off all running systems (or something like that). I thought I had done so.
I have to work this afternoon so I will try it again when I leave so it can run while I'm working.

I've got some ideas for your inbox repair when you get ready to tackle it. I assume it's still not working?
http://www.wilders.org/free_tools.htm About half way down the page is Fast DEFRAG Utility added 06/06/2001
will speed up the defrag from Win95/98 dramaticly! The link above leads to our downloads page; look for the "newdefrag.zip" (manual included). I took a look at it, it's for Windows 95/98 only, or I would have it myself.
