Helga, I found my windows 98 CD. I can send you a copy if you'll go to glassgrl on Ebay and use the contact member to send me your address. I'm not sure if it will work on your computer since it will have a different registration number, but it's worth a shot.

Alternately you can download Outlook Express http://www.tucows.com/preview/194179.html

I'm assuming you have Outlook and not express though, so that will not recover your .pst files I think.

here finally I found the a download for the Inbox repair tool! http://www.computerhope.com/download/updates.htm

and here, last but not least, is a page on how to do it...note where they say on running scandisc 2 to 3 times in between running the repair tool. At the bottom of the page is 4 links to a free trial/buy me type of program. I'm not suggesting that you buy the program but if running one of them could get your outlook back up and running it might be worth a shot.
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm

You might just have to do without all the old emails just to get your outlook back.

I would try downloading the repair tool first (you never did say if you had that or could find that on your computer) and using it first.

Then decide if you want me to send my 98 disc and try that, or trying the last link and see what you think of that page.

I'm sorry, it's so busy for me during the week with working both places, it's hard for me to get back and forth online.

I have the inbox repair tool. When I tried to run it when I was talking to the my server people it would not run. So should I download the new one?

Or. If I deleted the Outlook I had and installed the one that is listed in your link would that work? I don't even care at this point about retrieving the old emails I lost. I would just like to have the Outlook back. If I uninstalled or removed the one I already have would that delete the corrupt file?

I will be online through the morning until I leave for work around 12:30 EST. Then I wont' be back until around midnight tonight.

Don't unistall your Outlook!

have you tried running the inbox repair tool since you've gotten rid of the trojan?

"For seriously corrupted PST files, try running Scandisk.exe (look under Programs | Accessories | System Tools) first, then Scanpst.exe, repeating 3-4 times until neither program returns an error. We've know this technique to restore data that the user though was lost forever."

This would be the first step I'd take. (The Scanpst.exe is the inbox repair tool)

Then you need to tell us what error message you're getting. You still haven't told us what Outlook you're running, Outlook or Outlook Express? There's a world of difference in the two.

I don't think there would be any harm in downloading that repair tool in the link if the other (above) doesn't work - scandisc - repair tool - scandisc - etc. Who knows? Maybe your repair tool is damaged.

You should just let me send you a copy of my W98 disc. So you hit the repair button and it always says - please insert disc. I don't think it's going to say THIS isn't your disc! All it's doing is pulling new files off of it. It the inbox repair tool on yours doesn't work, I'd get the disc from me.

Helga ... since you're at the point where you don't really care if you lose your old email correspondence ... then how 'bout just do a complete clean hard drive/reinstall the software that came with the computer and be back to a BRAND NEW FRESH COMPUTER, JUST LIKE THE DAY YOU BOUGHT IT ... (some kind of master disk that comes with the computer) ... gosh, you would be free as a bird ... (just then, proceed to install virus protection/firewall) ...... that would be awesome for you!

glassgrl -

I will run the scandisc.exe file in the a.m. I just got home from a long night at work and I'm exhausted. Just wanted to check in here so you know I'm still wanting to work on this.

I run Microsoft Outlook.

I really don't want to wipe the hard drive clean because of other programs I have that I don't want to lose like my printer/scanner - I can't find the original disk to have to reinstall it. (I know, I know...) So I'd rather do all that glassgrl is suggesting first.

Will be around in the a.m.

Thank you again SO very much for being so patient and helping me!

Okay some good things and bad things.

Bad things:

I tried to run scandisk 3 times and every time my computer froze.

I've tried to uninstall Incredimail ((whoever said it sucks is RIGHT. I have an online access to my server that I'm no using). IT won't uninstall. I get a "Not Responding" error from it, my computer freezes and I have to reboot. Can I uninstall it some other way than going into the Control Panel to the Add/Remove Programs?

Defrag says that there is an error in Drive C and to fix it with scandisk but then my first problem happens.

Good things:

Not running incredimail helps my computer run faster as well.

The Inbox Repair tool worked!

I got this message when I ran it -

Errors found in C:\\Windows\Local Settings\Application

Click Repair

So I did. It ran through about 10 minutes and I got a pop up box that says Repair Complete.

So now what is the next step from there I'm so excited that part worked because after the Incredimail thing and the defrag/scan disk I was getting really irritated.

I'll be online until around 1:30 est and back home tonight around 9 est

Thanks a ton glassgrl

Oh it asked ifI wanted to make a backup of the scanned files before repairing and I checked yes.

ok you go girl

Here's the GOOD way to do it:
Many people have problems running ScanDisk and/or Defrag, with the program running 10% or 30% and then stalling. Often with a message that Windows is trying to write to the drive. To run ScanDisk/Defrag successfully:

Go to Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open: box
On the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective startup (make sure that Selective startup is selected)
Hit apply and OK and restart Windows
This starts Windows with only the basics running; Insures nothing will interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag
Run ScanDisk and Defrag, when ready go into msconfig and select Normal startup and restart Windows.

I recomend trying that way first.

This is a little unorthodox so I don't want to hear any kicking and screaming.

Shut down your mail program. Other windows open are good (like this one). Now....pull the plug on your computer.

This will force it into scandisk when the computer starts back up.

Then try running the unistall Incredimail from the add/remove panel again.

ah...here it is:

Incredimail sets itself to automatically load during start up and runs in the background. You must stop it running before
trying to uninstall it. Press control alt delete and look in the task manager for something to do with "Incredimail"
Might be incredimail.exe or similar and END THE TASK.

Go to Start, All Programs, IncrediMail and select Uninstall.

Then run the Hijack this and check all references to Incredimail and "fix this"

Okay. I had tried to shut down Incredimail in the task manager and I thought I was but there was something in there with "ca" and it was doing the "not responding" thing so I shut it down too. I was able to uninstall Incredimail (THANK GOD). But I still cannot run scandisk even in the Safe Mode as you posted. It stalls and then freezes my computer. The defrag then won't run because it needs the scan disk to run.

I even did the unplug thing and scandisk runs at the beginning of the start up and then stalls.

It will not run.

OH! I almost forgot!

Now that you have your Outlook back - somewhere in your mailbox you still have that trojan email. So make sure you go through all your boxes and clean out anything you don't know who it's from. Delete it and then permanently delete it. and then run that virus program again.

AND in Outlook, go to TOOLS/OPTIONS/OTHER, choose Preview Pane and set your time to 60 seconds or so. I also have under Security and attachments, my attachment security set to HIGH. I also say don't download attachments ober 90kb but I think that just applies to dialup.

(I'm going for the longest thread here...)

You can try running scandisk in safe mode. If it doesn't work there then you need to go to DOS.

Windows 98 or Windows 95
To restart to a command prompt and run ScanDisk in real mode, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode, and then click Yes or OK.
At the command prompt, type scandisk, and then press ENTER.

then to get back to windows type:

C:win

alright I'm ticked.

I opened Outlook, it downloaded my email. I tried to delete everything I have and it won't let me. It tells me there is an error in that file, the one I listed initially. I run the repair tool. It says no error. So I open OUtlook BACK up, try to delete the emails and I get the error again. I at least can SEE the emails this time but it won't let me delete ANYTHING.

I'm so beyond frustrated

I have to leave for work. I Can't do anything else now until I come home tonight.

Hopefully I can get scandisk to run in safemode. This is getting ridiculous.

Thank you for your help, will do more tonight.

Well someone is going to be late for work...

In the midst of all of this I just spoke with my mother. Apparently my dad had a computer that is at his house less than 2 years old that he no longer uses (he upgraded). She's going to ask him if he can loan it to me or let me buy it (cheaply) from him so I can get rid of this dinosaur. That does not solve the problem in the fact that I need to know how to run a computer better than I do but it would help short term.

I didnt' know what to do about my printer because I can't find my software. I went to HP's website and the software is right there to download for me to run my printer when I would do a redownload.

I would lose everything I have saved on this computer I know. If I wanted to save pictures and such, I would just save those to a floppy before I switched computers, right? And then transfer them to a new one?

I realize this is jumping the gun because my dad is probably going to say no BUT there is a slim hope.

Anyhow, we'll see tonight. I'm supposed to stop at their house on my way home from work.

Glassgrl you have been wonderful helping me do this. I can't even express how much I appreciate it.

Hopefully I'll have some good news tonight.

I'm back from work.

My dad gave me his computer. He said he had some problems with it rebooting on it's own BUT it's only 3 years old and he bought a new computer last year so only used it for 2. It's loaded compared to what I have now.

I'm going to go through here, save some bookmarks to my yahoo email account, and do some other quick saving stuff and then I have to set up the new system. I am not sure how late it will be. Hopefully not too long.

Thanks for everything. Will be back sometime.

glassgrl,
I have a problem, wonder if you can help.

First, the reason I need to do what I can't seem to do.
I use a TY Beanie MasterCard & get points for using it. I use the points to get free Beanie's & sell them on eBay, have a few listed now.
The new MasterCard Beanie is now out & ready to order but it will take 8 to 10 weeks before you get them so all the MC Beanies are presell auctions. To get a picture you have to go to ty.com & copy the picture.
I used to be able to easily copy a picture as a jpeg & save it on a floppy disk & then upload it to my auction program. I can't do it now, when I save it to a floppy it will only save as ART or bitmap they are the only two choices & neither one will copy the image
to the disk. How come I don't have the choice of a jpeg & is there anyway I can get that choice again, had it on my PC. I used to be able to copy any picture, now I can't.

The pictures I am using were uploaded to my auction program by a friend who knows my user ID & PW, had to tell him so I could get the pictures.

My other computer (in storage) is a PC & had Windows Millenium. I could copy anything with that one.

I now have a Compaq notebook with both a floppy & a CD & am using Windows XP.

By the way, my old house is torn down & the new one is being built...finally. Will probably move in, in about 2 more months.
September 18th will be one year since Hurricane Isabel. Now you have to worry about Hurricane Ivan & maybe I will too.

Helga...You won't need floppys to save anything from your old computer. You can install the hard drive from the old computer into the new one as a slave drive and copy directly to the new HD. Also, the emails that windows won't let you delete can always be deleted in DOS. But that is a last resort and I wouldn't want to talk you through that process as there's too many ways things can head south in a hurry when you use the del *.* command. Glassgrl can probably come up with a safer way to do it in windows.

I'm Back!

On this other computer! It's wonderful so far, it takes less than a minute to shut down, restart and boot up. I'm amazed.

Now I have a few questions.

Where do I download a temporary Virus/Firewall from, like I did the other day? Since that other information is on the other computer do I still have my free trial date until I have to purchase? It was EZArmor I think I used. I will purchase those at the end of the 30 days but want to finish my trial.

I have Endicia but I have to reinstall Dazzle now. Will all that information transfer over?

I have so much to do now on this computer to get my stuff back online!

Helga ... wow, i bet you feel like a kid in a candy store ... i'm really GLAD to hear your dad gave you the computer ... tell him we said thanks, too. LOL

--------------
McJANE ~!!! Yay! ... your question is something *I* can help with, because when I had that problem, glassgrl found out for ME how to fix. LOL ..................
she had found it at microsoft's help boards, but i just went there to try to find the info again and i'm not finding it (was hoping to copy/paste it to here), but that's ok ... i've memorized how to "fix" it when that happens .... (it glitches on my puter sometimes, to the same scenario you describe, so that is why i have it memorized now lol) .......
------------------------
Open Tools/INTERNET OPTIONS
Delete All TEMP FILES
Click "Ok"

Then open INTERNET OPTIONS again,
at Temp Files box, click on "SETTINGS"
then click "VIEW OBJECTS"

Under the column named "Status", most or all
of the files will read, "Installed" ... NOW, IF ANY OF THEM DO NOT SAY, 'Installed', but has a different word there, (might say 'Corrupted' or something like that), delete those ones.
Then, click File/Close, then you're on the SETTINGS page again, and click "OK" on that page, ... then you are on the Internet Options page again and click, "OK" on there again .......

This will fix that problem, sometimes immediately, but sometimes i have to reboot, at that point, to make it 'fix' ....

A kid in a candy store isn't even how I feel, I cant' even explain it. I actually feel almost overwhelmed. I'm downloading my printer stuff right now.

I have to get Endicia done, I have a LOT of stuff to mail!

Before I start downloading a lot of crap onto this computer I need to know something.

I had Adaware sypware remover on that other computer. Should I reinstall that one or is there a better one?

What about pop up blockers? I am not using Mozilla on this one, I have IE so I am getting pop ups.

Also the above question about the virus and firewall.

Thanks!

Adaware is good ... so is spybot ... both 'free' to use.

panicware.com has a great pop-up blocker that is free, also.

and yes you MUST get SOME kind of virus stopper program, as well as a firewall. they are the most important thing to have on your computer, imho. (the virus scan company you mention, i don't think is one of the "biggies" in that industry, so i would think would not be AS "on top of" new viruses that come out) ... i think you should go with either Norton or McAfee.

(i use mcafee) ...

YAY Helga and YAAAAYYYY your dad!

go back through this thread and where that guy posted from SWI about the free virus programs. I use the AVG because it checks my Outlook mail. It is not 100% but then neither is my Norton either. But the AVG has caught some things my Norton hasn't. Make sure it updates very frequently though.

I use the Google toolbar and it stops a lot of pop ups. But if you're getting pop ups, you need to scan for Spyware and run the hijack too. I use Spybot AND adaware. Wouldn't hurt to do some virus scanning too with the earlier (in this thread) online virus scanning.

Do you have XP now? Their update (which you need to run new updates immediately) of service pack 2 has a popup blocker.

and yes, your Endicia software does transfer over.

Alright I got EZ Armour back on both firewall and virus scan. they are a year free trial I believe.

I can't get my Endicia up because it wants my authentication code from the original email and uh, I no longer have that. So I sent them an email and I'm waiting for their response.

I'm also having a hard time with my printer. It's a scanner/printer in one and the scanner works but I keep getting an error that tells me to install the printer and it is installed. So I'm doing an online chat (that is painfull slow) with HP right now trying to rememdy that. I have got to get both Endicia and my postage working, I have stuff I have to mail that I haven't had a chance to do all week.

So I will download Adaware probably tonight when I get home from work.

I don't want to leave, I love this computer

I tried Panicware when I first started getting popups but it would not let me open multiple pages, and if you have good internet connection and IE (not AOL) I couldn't open any more than one page without turning off the popup blocker.

Sometimes still with Google I'll get a popup but only once. Then it seems like it "learns" the popup and doesn't allow it through. Since I search Google a lot the toolbar is painless and handy.

I would recommend either of the virus software that SWI uses.

And for Spybot, make sure you use nothing unless it has a security de kolla link for it.

or this one, same thing. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

it doesn't hurt to run adaware and spybot. Used to, adaware didn't have an update feature so it was useless. Once I ran adaware one time and it picked up two bugs that spybot didn't, it's never found another one.

Windows updates for sure
Then your spyware checker(s)
Then virus - download one like AVG and run 1 or more online ones
Then hijack to check

You can compare your hijack to what you had before or post it here.

Could be you need to help your Dad set up a "safer" computer. And won't you sound smart when you say this is what you need on your computer and why? He may thank you in the long run LOL.

Glassgrl you have been wonderful through this. I feel like I really did learn some things and I really appreciate it. I love this computer - I feel like I'm running a brand new one (even though it isn't) and it's going so smooth (knock on wood).

I think I have everything installed now. I'm having problems with my Endicia Layout (see new thread) but other than that things seem to be doing okay.

I have to figure out now how to work the CD Burner. I'm really excited to have that.

I'm bookmarking this thread so I have it in the future Thank you again
