merrie, that is the problem I meant. You can get a refund the fvf's for Paypal, but you won't be able to for the fvf's on shipping cost on eBay.

Calculated shipping does not work for me. I am Canadian, but list on the .com site, when I started 12 years ago, there was no Canadian site. That means that the calculator comes up for USPS, no good to me.

amber: that is why I said I would not completely refund the entire difference. If they paid $60 for shipping without waiting for an invoice from you and did not inquire as to discounted shipping(and I cannot imagine why someone would do that if you mentioned combined shipping in your description and shipping details) and it actually costs you $10, then I would refund $40, not $50. Explain that Ebay takes a % and they did not wait for an invoice from you as you requested and you need to cover added fees.

Yes Merrie, that is what I am going to do, I can't swallow any more fees, I sell low profit items anyway. I am going to have to put a new LARGE font message about not paying before I send the invoice, and HOPE buyers will see it.

Remember if you refund the entire amount back to the customer you still have to pay PayPal .30 then you'll pay thet again when the customer resends your payment.

Paypal is not a credit card processor, what it has is multiple merchant accounts with different credit card processors.
When your customer makes a payment via paypal, its credit card processor gets a cut from your payment, lets say the credit card processor charges Paypal 1% and a 15 cents transaction fee and Paypal charges you 2.65% and a 30 cents transaction fee,the difference of 15 cents transaction fee and (2.65%-1 %) discount fee is Paypal gross profit on that payment.
When you refund your customer ,it is another transaction, and its credit card processor also charges a fee (transaction and discount fee),it is smaller than a debit entry but nevertheless it is a fee,Paypal used to absorb that, but with more people hitting refund button,it does not want to do so anymore.
If you have your own merchant account to accept credit card payments, you will understand what is going on when you receive your monthly statement.
If you refund the same day, before Paypal batches all the transactions and submit to its processors late at night, you may not have to pay a fee on the refund transaction.
