I agree with most of what's been covered, and will add what makes my heart sink , and then by the 4th sale of the day, gets me really depressed...

Stuff that's 10-15 yrs out of date!

I'm sure you all know what I mean! It's too recent for nostalgia, too available for value; basically , you're just sick of seeing the stuff:
Slate-blue calico folksy fabric,
Flatware with pastel handles,
Massive shoulder pads, gaudy cheap earrings,
Vile-scented dust-collecting wreaths and dried flower wall decor,
Huge bamboo fans and big brass butterflies,
Silly sweatshirts, supermarket promo' china & cookware and yes...gingham geese!

I am only 21 so I HATE it when someone says "Sonny, I got the perfect set of golf clubs for you over on the driveway" or "You're a young buck. These speakers would be perfect for your dorm room".

Are you sure that after seeing how young you are they didn't say "You're a fast buck. These speakers would be perfect for your dorm room"?

Agreed about old signs! It's great to see a sign and them you drive up and was in 1982!

I got so mad at one person who wallpapered our neighboorhood with signs! He never took them down! there was one on every corner. Finally, I sent him a letter in the mail telling him to take down his signs. Easy to do since his address was on EVERY sign!

skizzi..... and THEN did he take them down?

reminds me of years ago....... we were having a garage sale at my folks house in a nice neighborhood in southeast Napa. At the major intersection by Philips school I put the best, most colorful sign, went to more work on it, big clear arrows pointing, a tiny red/white flag stuck in the top of it. Nailed it to a telephone pole. (you understand how embarassing it is to stand on your car bumper with nails in your mouth holding a sign WAYYYYY up and swingin' that hammer?) I went out to get more change at one point and my sign was GONE!

I found it at the next corner, pointing to another garage sale, they'd taped a sheet of paper over our address with their address. I drove over and calmly told them what I thought. It is stealing. They claimed they thought the sign was old and they were reusing it. I just said "no."
Creeps.

-FYI - I ALWAYS go back on Sunday nights and remove all garage sale signs AND all the nails/tape I used to put them up. Always. By Sunday night I'm too tired to be embarrassed if I had to go get them in my bathrobe.

immykidsmom--- no he didn't take them down... but it felt good to take action letting him know he has a responsibility to the community. If I ever get the energy or time, I'd like to take down people's signs and mail them to them! " Hey! Here's your trash!".

My other big peeve is when I'm driving around in an unknown neighborhood and the sign only states the address with NO arrows. What are these people thinking? That we know exactly where their cul-de-sac lurks in the middle of a tract of houses?? The best signs are simply ones that say "Yard Sale" with an arrow pointing the way... don't need much more than that!

And finally, I actually like the yard sales where there are no prices. They are overwhelmed with customers and usually
just say fifty cents or a dollar. When they have taken the time in advance to mark prices then they have usually given it too much thought AND value!

I love to go for long walks when I have the time. I always remove signs when I'm walking. It sure makes the town look better
and makes it easier for me to find the new sales. One time there were so many signs put up by one seller that everytime I was walking I would take one down and throw it on his sidewalk in front of his house. In fact for a while I made it a point to walk to a new signs location and return it to the owner.
Thankfully I never got picked up for littering!

About signs. I was with a friend out west. We were driving across the desert and there is this small but paved road that leads off and a little folding sign like real estate people use that says "Rock Shop Open 7 Miles" and an arrow. He turns and drives seven miles and pulls up and it is a little 10 x12 or so white clap board building and it says - "Closed Wen. and Thur." The driver takes a sheet out of his notebook - writes "Sign at main roads says open - you lied." Goes over to the edge of the lot and gets a stone about the size of a baseball - wraps the sheet around it and hurls it through the front picture window that is about half the face of the store. Gets back in car and is waiting for me to say something about that being a little extreme. I kept my mouth shut and was happy the local cops did not pull up behind us before we got back to the main road.
