I have noticed just recently that my gallery pictures (which have been running consistently for the last few months) have deteriorated noticably.
Could this have something to do with your recent "emergency backup procedure". Were all the pictures backed up and then the backup pictures became part of the auctions? I know that everytime you re-save a jpeg file that there is a loss in picture quality.
I have done nothing to alter the pictures, so this is the only thing I can think of.

Can you link me to some of the images so that I can check them? I viewed a few of your images and they look fine, you may need to clear your cache and check that you don't have the compressed images setting selected.
