I have tried entering html directly into the "html editor" and I have entered it without using html. Either way, all formatting is lost (paragraphs, font size, bullet list) when I do a preview. Is there some secret Magical formula to this?

Yahoo may not allow HTML -- you may want to double check with them on this as well, to make sure what you are entering is or isn't allowed on Yahoo auctions.
If you have an item we can look at, please let us know what it is.
