Hello, I have a shortcut on my desktop that brings me directly to My eBay's seller list page. Tonight the page that came up was AOL's eBay seller list! I don't use AOL and have no idea why or how AOL has me in their clutches. Even my bookmarks come up on AOL. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks!!

What do you mean by "AOL's ebay seller list"? What did the page look like? Where was the AOL logo?

Also, what do you mean by "even my bookmarks came up on AOL"? Do you mean this was all happening within the AOL "browser", instead of the browser you normally use (Netscape or Internet Explorer)?

My guess is that the AOL client has been set as your default internet connection, but I need a little more info.

This has happened to me also when I use my shortcut to my current listings. The AOL reference was a long, thin, blue banner that ran across the top of my browser. It doesn't happen all the time. When it does, I refresh the page and it usually goes away. I don't use AOL for my ISP. One hour and forty five minutes of busy signals did it for me.

AOL banners have appeared on my eBay too. I believe this is just eBay's advertising. I scoured my hard drive after I left AOL so whenever I see this sort of thing I want to scratch.

Thanks for the input.

amalgamated: I use Netscape. There was a blue AOL banner across the top of my page with links to AOL help, mail and search. Every bookmark for an eBay page also came up like that. It looked like a "browser" under my own Netscape browser.

yeager: I refreshed each page, but nothing changed. I also can't use AOL as my ISP but for a different reason - it's a long-distance call to get online!

mballai: I thought the same thing, but wouldn't have a clue how to search or scratch my hard drive.

Good news! This morning AOL was gone. Still don't know how it got there - I'm just glad it left!

To me, it seems that using AOL is like taking a wrong turn on the information super highway!

seaaire,

I haven't heard about this before, but my guess is that this is some kind of experiment that Netscape is doing (remember, Netscape is owned by AOL.)

However, this should only work if you have the default Netscape page set as your home page. If so, you can avoid the problem by setting your home page to a different page.

If your home page is not Netscape, I'm really at a loss to explain it.

It's not Netscape, it's eBay. I use IE, and I've randomly seen the AOL banner atop My eBay; I've also seen the eBay Motors/AutoTrader banner up there. eBay is just continuing their never ending promotion of their corporate sponsors. No big thing- just ignore 'em.

my idea is this:
have you downloaded the new netscape 6.XX version? this could attempt to setup AOL as your default everything.
have you installed AOL 5.XX onto your computer? this will definitely try to have AOL as your default.
i had to rip version 5.0 out by it's roots to get it off of my computer!

I finally figured this out!

Someone sent me a link to an auction, and when I clicked on it, I got the strange AOL banner at the top.

Turns out its an eBay "mirror" site that AOL runs. Basically, the idea is that AOL hosts a copy of a lot of the files from the eBay site, but it still interfaces with the same database. When an AOL user goes to eBay, much of the information comes from AOL's servers, so it never actually travels across the internet, drastically cutting down on bandwith required both for AOL and for eBay.

Anyway, if you use the AOL browser and type in eBAy as a keyword, it takes you to http://ebay.aol.com. (If you're not on AOL, you can view the site by clicking on the link.) This is the mirror site with the AOL banners.

Now, as for how this appeared on someone's computer who is not an AOL user, I don't know. My guess is that it has something to do with the browser's autocomplete feature, but I don't really know.

I too have a shortcut on my desktop that goes to My eBay Page and every now and then, when I click on it, I get eBay Canada!
