Last night I went to an auction. I was able to get some really neat things. I packed them carefully in boxes and put them in the truck. Another person was helping me load and I didn't check to make sure the box he put into the truck was pushed forward enough. My mistake. When I got home, I started to unload. I said to myself, gee I thought I had another box. I thought that I had left it at the auction house. (wishful thinking) So I unloaded the remaining boxes, turned around (this is at 10:30 at night) and retraced my steps. There along the county road was the box with glass every where. Luckily only 90% of it broke and some of the other items were plastic so they had just bounced all over the road. I spent at least ten minutes (it was pitch black)picking up chunks of glass off the road hoping that no one would crest the hill and hit me. What a sickening feeling. It wasn't that the glass cost so much, it was the fact it was really old glass. It stood the test of time until I got it. It could have been worse. I had another box the same exact size, but it held the really expensive stuff. Lesson learned - ALWAYS double check when you are finished loading the truck.

There must be a zillion incidents of purses, wallets, books, coffee cups and brief cases that fly off car roofs when their absent-minded owners hit the accelerator.

I think you are in good company

Another piece of advice... put the tailgate up!

Sorry to hear about your lost items, and glad no one was hurt in the process.

It is amazing how often you see folks driving pickups with unsecure loads. We were driving on the expressway last week, two cars behind a truck with tree limbs in the bed. I made a comment to hubby about staying back, as I had a feeling the car ahead of us was way too close to that truck.

All of sudden off bounces a huge limb, the car ahead of us drove over it and we went around it on the right. Looked back and saw cars weaving all over the place to miss it.

I forgot to mention. I had purchased two large folding tables that were longer than the bed. This was the reason the tailgate wasn't up or else it would have been. Another lesson learned. Don't buy anything longer than the bed of the truck!

Oh yuck.

I was behind my mom once when we were moving me out of my apartment into a bigger place, she had the flatbed trailer behind her truck and I was in my little economy car. I am obsessive about getting things tied down tight so I bugged her to check and re-check everything before we started out on the 30 mile trip, and I didn't have a good feeling about the stuff being secure. Sure enough, about halfway there off comes my antique vanity, bouncing down the highway! Ugh!!! Luckily it only snapped an 80 year old leg, and we were able to fix it. It could have been worse, I suppose; could've been something REALLY heavy that would have killed me in the process. I refuse to follow her anymore when we're moving stuff though!
