I found a postcard in an old book of the inside of a particular pharmacy in Atlanta, GA. But I can't date it at all. My only hint is that (where you put the stamp) it says 'Domestic and Canada One Cent - Foreign Two Cents'.

So - does anyone know when the postage rate for postcards went up from one cent? (That at least gives me an ending date.)

Also, it was published by 'Witt Bros., Atlanta, GA and Berlin Germany' (if that rings a bell with anyone).

Thanks in advance...

I have postcards that date back to the mid 20s and 30s the would require 1 cent postage but I wouldnt go by this what you really want to know is when postage went up over 1 cent cause I also have postcards with 2cent postage stamps on them from the earily to mid 50s

so you could say this post card could be 45 or more years old. best way and cheapest way to find history on this card would to be post a scan of the card you might even find someone here who remember the store this picture is from

It's more common, I believe, to date postcards by the postcard itself rather than the postage on it.

Private mailing cards: 1898-1901
Undivided back: 1901-1907
Divided back: 1907-1915
White border: 1915-1930
Linen: 1930-1944
Photochrome: 1945 to date

Glenda

you are right this may be the more common way to date postcards for dealers it is certinly easiest way but not totally acurate

as many know there are white bordered cards from the 50s and 60s 70sand in some cases can still be found today.

is always much better to be able to describe the age by the photo if it was my postcard I would want to list it with something like this exsample

nice postcard Pictures the inside of 1920s pharmacy in Atlanta, GA
post card is used and Has a postmarked one cent stamp.or (unused no stamp)

rather then

postcard used with .01 cent stamp white border dates 1915-1930

I think the top listing is more colorfull and would make it more desirerable to three categories of collectors postcard collector, stamp collectors and old pharmacy items collectors

you are right there is no way to date a postcard by what the postage should be on it

but I feel its more important to Identify some history of the photo age and pharmacy in Atlanta,GA .
