I hope that someone can answer this question for me. I was at eBay looking for a DSL modem and there were 30 listed for this certain brand I was looking for. Alot of the starting prices were real low like $9.99 with a Buy It Now icon at the end of the listing but when you go to the auction you see the starting price at a lot higher price like $90.00 and no But It Now option and only 1 bid on the item.

I can't beleive that a person would go and bid such a high price on an item he should have gotten for $9.99 if the Buy It Now option was there.

Any answers out there?

Was the auctions closed? It sounds as if they were and the winner used the "BIN" option. That is the way I have seen them anyway.

These auctions were still active with 1+days left.

I don't claim to be an expert, but if the item was worth $180 and people wanted it they may have opted to take a "BIN" for $90 rather than risk it going higher at auction. I had several games in the week before Christmas that went for more than double what I put the "BIN" option at. It could be that some people perceive $90 as a good deal and jump on it while others take their chances with a full-term auction. That fact that the starting price is $9.99 does not mean you ever get it for $9.99.

I just can't understand people. If they can buy something for $10.00 why pay $100.00 for it. There may have been a reserve price on the auction. I just checked again and alot of the auctions are now closed. But a couple are still active with the BIN icon in the search listing but not in the auction.

I have deleted your post because it contained a link to an auction and therefore identified the Seller and winning bidder. If you want to post it again, please follow the requirements outlined in the CGs.

I just looked too and I didn't see any of what you are saying. If there was an opening bid and only one bid was given, yes the BIN goes away and the opening bid is there, that means the opening bid must of been $100. Not $9.99

No, Michelle I am not going to invite anyone. Lock the thread if you want to. I think the originator has an agenda anyway so this will be my last post to this thread.

Um, no expert here, but could it be that when the first bid was placed the BIN disappeared from the auction, but the icon stayed on the search listing? Just a thought.

I went into eBay search for a certain DSL modem and there were 30 items listed and some of the listings had a BIN icon at the end of the listing with a price listed at $9.99 and when you go to the auction there is no BIN option and 1 bid at $90.00 and the starting price was alot higher than $9.99 that was listed on the search page.
No 12pole I don't have an agenda. I just thought that it was interesting that something listed in the search results would have a price of $9.99 and have ony one bid so high. I will let it rest.

Then you have idiots like me who hit the comma key instead of the decimal key and bid $20,000.00 for a $20.00 item...thank God for bid retraction...

I had a lady bid $80 on a $10 item because it was not available in her geographic area and it was the only thing on her granddaughter's Christmas wish list. I love bidding wars!
