I always seem to find items to sell that a few times a month will go for far more than I would have expected.
I have one right know like that,do you comae across items that suprise you on final bids.
I also have a good number that never get to where I expect them too.
The current one are some loose pages from a history book thats over 400 years old in English.
Ilustrated this set concerns a very famous person in Scottish History.
I thought there would be some interest in them and listed them as featured starting at 1c.
I figured they where good for 100.00
Well yesterday the bidding was at 405.00 I almost fell over.Today they are over 500.00.
I have been tempted to end the auction as I think the bidding is well crazy.
But whenever I do that I have people email me saying they where going to bid towards auctions end.

I don't get why a section of pages would be worth that, unless it includes plates? Even if the book is rare - and often times 400-YO books aren't - wouldn't its value be determined by its condition?
funny

imabrit....I will never understand why people would end an auction early under this circumstance. IMO, just enjoy and do the old happy dance. This is what makes it fun and keeps us going...those wonderful surprises!

$500.00, eh?
That will make you wonder how much the book is really worth.

A complete 2 volume set of the first edition as this one is has been offered for sale by a book dealer at 18,000.
What I had was an incomplete volume 1 only but this was the only one that was ilustrated of the 2 volumes.
Being incomplete it is ideal for one to leaf out page by page. These leafs are in good condition but the subject matter is the thing.
Its BRAVEHEART or William Wallace is the subject matter.

If it is about "BRAVEHEART" or "William Wallace" and it is 400 years old, it is worth a lot to collectors. These particular Scottish books are in high demand - despite condition- and are scarce, if not rare and should sell in the multiple of hundreds if not more.
No collector would ever tear it apart... The book is worth a good deal of money...but not in individual leafs despite how "pretty" the plates are to frame.
Lucky you to have found such a treasure!

genie9.
You are not quite correct about leafing a book out.It is quite common on a piece that is very much incomplete to leaf out by the page.
A collector it not interested in an incomplete volume. If they are it does not bring that much in the condition it is in believe me I have tried this many a time.
Therefore it makes good sense to leaf by a page. There are a number of dealers wordlwide that dothis as a business and it is not uncommon to find single pages come up for auction at brick and mortar auctions sites all over the world.
This particular volume consists of only about 500 pages out of approx 2000.
This volume focuses on the history of Britain and consisted of 3 parts.
Believe me if the volume was anywhere near complete it would be sold as a whole.
Its an interesting business and I am always looking for incomplete books that can be identified as to title and year as without these 2 basic facts its of no value to most.
Still suprised me what these few pages are fetching.
thanks Adrian

Way to go, Imabrit!
Our latest surprise was a copy of Baa Baa Black Sheep, written by Pappy Boyington. The surprise came when I opened it to start writing the description and discovered it was signed!
Bought for a quarter; sold for $160
I also picked up a video at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago for a couple of bucks. Well, it looks like it'll sell for well over $60.
Like nanastuff said, This is what makes it fun and keeps us going...those wonderful surprises! To me that's the beauty of eBay... I don't necessarily need to know the value of stuff. It helps, but it isn't necessary.

Yes, every month. Items I'm hoping to get $50-100 on, that end at $500+, and that's the beauty of eBay!
