I'm also interested in having web site. I wouldn't mind paying $20 a month if you get the traffic directed to your site. I'm just not as computer savy as most of the posters here appear to be. I've only been selling 6 months, I've got a lot to learn. Would appreciate any info. Thanks

Are you looking for a host for your own domain? Or are you looking for an easy, inexpensive way to do e-commerce?
If it's the latter, take a look at www.freemerchant.com and www.freetailer.com
You also might check your ISP. Most inclue some web space with your account and some have web site building tools & templates.

Like the others have said, it really depends on what you're looking for (ie: secure server, front page extensions, CGI, price, etc.) I am with American Web Hosting (http://www.amhosting.net/) for $7.95 a month with their basic package. I am extremely happy with them as they have incredibly fast and friendly customer support. And no I don't work for them either.
When I was first looking, I used a number of the sites that allow users to post reviews of their experiences with companies. You might want to to try that...
http://www.hostsearch.com/reviews.asp
http://www.hostfind.com/
http://www.hostindex.com/
http://www.hostfinders.com/reviews/
If you're looking for a free service until you get your feet wet, I used Hypermart for the first year. With the free sites you have to have ads on your pages or annoying pop-ups, but it's a good training ground.

http://www.freemerchant.com/
http://www.bigstep.com/
http://www.freeservers.com/
As for the actual designing of a site, you may wish to learn HTML. A good site for this is http://www.htmlgoodies.com.
Hope that helps!

I like and use www.websolo.com
Their prices range from $6.95 and up.
Nice folks. Have used them for several years with one of my domain names (not the school-auction.com one though)
Have fun with the site! Lots of fun too.

Ok...here's another question for those who have "site" experience.
What does bandwidth have to do with price? I have found that different pricing rates are pretty much based on bandwidth...the higher the price, the more customer bandwidth you are allowed. I am assuming that each time someone goes to your site, a certain amount of bites are transferred from the site to the user. How much is used on an average "look see" at a site? How much do you think I would need for a simple site selling say collectables? I really don't know how much traffic I would expect.
How many gigs is enough?
And finally...what would happen if I got the cheap plan and went over the allowed amount of bandwidth?
All thoughts woulod be greatly appreciated.

bandwidth determins the amount of trafic your website will be able to handle with out slowing down the entire server.
there is a big difference in the band bandwidth a personal web site with no file to down load will use compared to say a website the gives away and or sell software or shareware few Hundered visits a month just looking or a few hundered per day down loading files for 30 min to hours at a time.
If your site uses more bandwidth then your web provider can dish out they will send you hate mail asking you to fix the problem find another web server for your site or up grade which ever fits the situtation.
if your site uses to much bandwidth it could crash there whole server and many thousands of other websites one of the frist question the place you choose will ask is how much trafic you exspect to generate daily weekly monthly also if they allow these things will ask if you will have HTML and or FTP down loads avalable ECT. to try and determin the bandwidth your site will requirer.
The more bandwidth required the higher the cost some of the larger website on the web use several web servers all useing the maxium bandwidth.

The guy who set up my web site did a great job. He got me the domain name, a 50 megabyte site, unlimited email ids that can forward to any other ids, helped me with the html and javascript and has been very available and patient. I've already recommended a number of folks to him and they are all very happy. He can be reached at [email protected]. He charged me $10 a month for the 50 meg site and domain registration, based on 2 year contract.

Hi there! I use Freemerchant and I'll include my storefront link for your reference (I doubt there are many stained glass enthusiasts on this link - so I'm not here to promote my site). Freemerchant is a great site to organize your merchandise, and the cost is absolutely free. This site is easy to put together too. If you want to enable a merchant account, that will cost extra (I prefer to have my customers contact me direct).
Here's my link for your reference:

Good luck!
