I had a customer from Germany purchase an expensive, $70, book on ebay. To save on shipping costs I was wondering if it would be advisable to ship the book sans a box and put it in a bubble mailer and then in a plastic tyvec type mailing envelope. anyone forsee a problem with this system??

Since this is an expensive book *and* it has to go a long way, I think it needs more protection than bubblewrap and an envelope. Are you planning on sending it airmail or surface?

The only problem I foresee is the $70 book's corners getting bashed in by collisions with the items whose shippers DID put them into boxes.
And then your buyer would be really unhappy with you.
Tape the book into a plastic baggie, wrap it SNUGLY with several layers of bubblewrap, and then build a box of sturdy cardboard to cover the bubblewrapped book. The easiest way is to place the book in the center of the top edge of a big sheet of cardboard. Now draw a "T", with the top arm as wide as the book and the stem as wide as the book. Cut out the "T" and wrap it around the book. the arms wrap one direction and the stem the other. Tape it. You are done.

The last expensive book I sent overseas went like this (it was a soft cover large book, but regardless);
Tissue paper around the book, followed by bubble wrap (tissue paper to avoid any of the tape getting stuck to the book when taping the bubble wrap up), sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard (slightly larger than the book), taped tight. Entire thing stuck in a close fitting, clear plastic bag just in case something could get wet, and taped closed, and THAT was stuck into a large bubble envelope.
No, it wasn't all that cheap to ship, but wouldn't have been regardless, and I felt secure in the safety of the book for it's journey.
