Would appreciate your recommendations for shopping carts to be used on a web site-the good and the bad.

Thanks very much.

freemerchant.com (it's free)
miva.com (very nice)
akopia.com (open source and free, reasonably priced hosting at korksoft.com)
zelerate.org (open source and free)
dellhost.com (good prices, Mercantec SoftCart is a great product)
Storesense.com (wonderful but expensive)
Visualtrends.com (wonderful, but expensive, they are adding an auction feature, that works with eBay, Amazon and Yahoo, in their next release, due out in March)
Theexchangeproject.org (open source and free, has integration with PayPal)
cartit.com (great if all you need is a cart)
catalog.com (also a good product)
onlineorders.net (a god shopping cart resource)

Also check out internet.com's ecommerce guide, they have tons of reviews for shopping carts and storefront builders.

Also take a look at the Dansie cart. It's written in Perl, runs on both Unix and NT, and easy to setup and maintain.

The really great thing about Dansie is that it's very economical because it comes in a "mall" version. What that basically means is if you go with a web host that has the mall version you can use it without the effort and expense of buying and installing it yourself. The host deals with installing it on your server for you, new releases, etc.

We use the Dansie cart mall version on our web site and like it a lot. It's provided by our host Ocean View Host (http://oceanviewhost.com).

ccnow.com is easy and you don't pay unless something sells.

ccnow charges something like 9% though. If there is a shopping cart that works around paypal, that would be great. free helps too. Anyone know of one? thx

Hi,
We use www.mals-e.com as a free shopping cart, and it ties into PayPal. Works great! Also allows money order or check purchases. Give it a try!

I use Miva. It works well and is very user friendly. It easy to attach pictures to and also setup shipping rates.

The thing I like the best is how easy it is to make new catagories and add products to them.

If you have any questions, email me.

Dansie versions 3.10 and higher have two ways you can have customers send payment via PP.
