F**ked Company.com has a rumor that Amazon is laying off %20 of the work force.

Anyone confirm ?

I can't confirm but I've been hearing rumors of layoffs and people being shifted around for months.

As an AUCTION PRO, I know that none of us auction guys have reps anymore. My former rep is now at the IMDB.

I was told a few weeks ago that support was only for Marketplace sellers but today my 114 Markeplace listings have all been dumped in ZShops which I've never used??

And support over the last few months speaks for itself.

Hopefully Amazon will pull itself together. I'd miss it and even with all of the aggravation still love the site, when it works, that is.

here is a story on the rumor CBS Marketplace.

I think Amazon chased away a lot of people from their auctions when they announce all sellers have to offer Amazon's payment service. I'd hate to see that practice spread, so I'm not wishing them the best of luck.

15% or 1,300 jobs over the next 3 months are being eliminated.

I guess when Amazon was denying the 20% layoff as untrue the rumor wasn't far off.

Funny thing, I was searching on Amazon around 5pm PST today, when all of a sudden their entire site was inaccessible... I went to Yahoo and saw the news about the layoffs.

Guess one of the newly EX-employees pulled the plug on something somewhere.

And they reported losses of $90+ million today, I believe.

But, the losses were LESS than expected, and they are now saying that they will be profitable by the fourth quarter of this year. Basically, that means that any of their various ventures which are not showing a profit right now will be shut down. It will be interesting to see which ventures those are...

Yep, just saw it on the evening news. They lost $500,000,000 in the last three months of 2000. Yikes! It's a good site so I hope they can survive. Their free holiday shipping certainly didn't help them generate money.

That free holiday shipping helped Amazon generate about $125 out of me. I would've spent some of that money over at Buy.com (which also offered free shipping) -- and would have bought the books I needed at the mall, but I spent it all on Amazon instead in order to qualify for free shipping for everything I needed to buy.

vargas, and you probably helped contribute to their losses. lol. Their profit margin is small and they said they lose money on larger orders. Don't have that article on hand.

I took advantage of the free shipping offer. I placed 2 orders, each just over $100. The shipping for each order was in the vicinity of $28. This accounted for a huge savings on my end. At the time I wondered how they made a profit on the sale. Now I think I know. Am I guilty of adding to their loss by supporting them by making a purchase? An odd thing to ponder ...
