Hi all! I have to vent and bounce something out here. What I am looking for is "what would you do" kind of answers.

I am a seller - small time - on ebay. I list all my stuff with pretty much the same language in my TOS. One thing that I almost ALWAYS say is:

"Winning bidder to pay $X.XX shipping. International shipping extra as well as insurance, or delivery confirmation."

When my auction ends I send out a WBN that also says:

"if you are a Canadian resident PLEASE email me for the correct shipping total."

Sure enough - I get a buyer who lives in Canada and apparently has not read either of my TOS or WBN. They sent payment and a shipping address (via mail) and sure enough it is to Canada.

Now I really don't mind shipping to Canada or anywhere else for that matter - but I do mind paying for it. I have emailed this buyer to remind them that INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING IS EXTRA! They have paid the $5.00 (for US shipping) but the difference is an addition $12! NO WAY AM I GOING TO PAY THIS!

Do you think that person just made a mistake - or do you think that this buyer is trying to get away with a cheap deal? Hmm....

Now I have to wait another 2 weeks for the rest of the shipping cost - I would almost rather just relist and take my chances of getting a US buyer!

What would you do?

Wait for the additional shipping cost. I have done this several times, sometimes even shipped before the extra money was there. But I sell books and we are talking $1 or $2.00 extra, not $12.00. But it's the buyers mistake, so they have to wait until the 2nd payment reaches you. At least you already have the money for the item, and you can be sure to get payed the rest, since the buyer won't want to loose his 1st payment.
If you send back the 1st payment and relist, who knows what happens.....

It may have just been an oversight. But maybe not. Either way, you'll never know.

Have they agreed to send the the extra money?
If they have then give it a few days to get to you. If they send the extra $$$, then let just let it go at that. No harm done.

However, if they don't pay, then file a NPB. You can file a NPB for bidder's who don't pay in full. First they will get a "reminder to pay" from ebay. Maybe that will get them cooperating. If that still doesn't work, then file for your FVF credit. You come out on top and they get a mark on their record. May be it will teach them to read things a little closer.

Good luck!

edited because I keep thinking of stuff to say

I have emailed this person tonight to let them know that the shipping charge is much more than the $5 - BECAUSE they live in Canada.

I looked in my old emails and this buyer never responded to my WBN. He only responded once I sent him a reminder email - he let me know that he sent the money. This whole time I was assuming that it was a US buyer.

When I got his payment today - that is when I found out he was a Canadian buyer.

What a hassel! I guess I will have to wait until I get a response - I hope it will be soon as I have already waited a while to get the payment to begin with.

Why is shipping to Canada so much more? I rarely ship anywhere but the States, but last week I sent a small package to Ontario. It only cost $3.55 I think, almost exactly what it would have cost to ship in the US. The buyer didn't want insurance, but that would have been $7.50 more, not $12.

I don't know what you are shipping to Canada, but my shipping charges are the same for Canada as they are for the states, unless the item is over 4 pounds. If your item is under 4 pounds, you are using the wrong method to ship to Canada. I am assuming you are mailing the item-don't ship UPS to Canada-they get reamed by a brokerage fee.

The item I am shipping is a board game - it is a BIG board game. The box is 24x12x12 and the weight is 8 pounds.

The cost to ship this item to Canada is:

United States Postal Service: $17.25
United Parcel Service: $16.50
FedEx Ground: $17.50

The buyer has paid $5.00 for shipping. That is what it would cost FedEx Ground in the US.

So the buyer owes about another $10 to $12 for shipping - and that does not even include insurance.

By the way - that URL was really uncool! Please stick to the topic. I really don't see how that applys here!

In that case I would calmly email this buyer, and include those prices. (excluding the one for UPS because you DON'T want to use UPS ever for Canada)

Explain that you won't be shipping the game unless the entire amount is paid. Point the buyer to your auction terms again, in case they honestly missed them. I would think that anyone living in Canada is aware of possible higher shipping costs for larger packages.

I've had this problem several times. I ship mainly books. THe PO has dropped bookrate mail to Canada which used to be about the same as US under 4 pounds. Now it's letter post or Mbag which can be considerably more to ship than what it used to be. A 3 pound book shipped media mail in the US cost $2.20 . For suface mail to Canada it cost $7.20 . It used to cost $4.00 to ship prior to the 1-7 increase. So yes there is a big difference. Alot of them don't know that bookrate was dropped or have only had light stuff shipped which is about the same as US so they think it's all the same.
