I picked up a few older children's books today. The only problem is that someone had marked the number each one was in the series on the back of the book and on the spine.
It doesn't look like marker, more like pencil crayon or grease pencil. Does anyone know of a way to remove these without wrecking the books?

Hi, berkeley - I doubt that you'll be able to get it off; you may just make matters worse. You might try the kind of art eraser that you knead - rub very gently, constantly changing to a clean area of the eraser. The danger is that you may just smear the mark, or abrade the surface of the book. On shiny, non-porous surfaces nothing works like Goo-Gone (available at Wal-Mart, etc.), but from your picture, it looks like you have a paper or cloth surface, which Goo-Gone will spot.

I have bought books like this BECAUSE they were slightly marked- as I 'see' the child in the markings...the marks add character, letting me see they were used and loved, but you must consider, I probably am not normal! I don't know if I am allowed to put the name of a seller here, but I bought my magic cloths on ebay, and with no chemicals, many marks can be removed with a wet, well wrung out cloth, and some gentle elbow grease. I agree with the last post, it may be best to leave them. they are just the results of things expected by an excited little child who has possibly acquired 'whole set of books'!!
