I got payment the other day, in my mailbox, with no username or auction number. I searched through all my email to see if maybe somebody had signed one of their letters to me with their real name...no luck. I have no idea who this person is, and I can't distinguish by the payment amount, because many of my customers owe me that exact same amount.
How do you go about your detective work when this happens? I have written out bulk emails to all the people who haven't paid me yet, but nobody has spoken up and said it was him. My requirement in order to know that the person is telling the truth is for them to give me their real name, so it matches the name on the return address of the envelope.
Any other suggestions? What I have tried has not worked so far.

I get that all the time, and usually I can plug in their real name in my yahoo email search and most of the time it comes up.
You have done everything I do except one other thing. Go thru all the emails of bidders that have responded that they will send you payment of which you have yet to see their payment, and see if they signed their name or atleast their first name.
If still nothing - just wait - it's their fault not yours and they will contact you sooner or later.

You could try pulling the contact info on each buyer that has not paid yet that owes that same amount until you find your match...

What I do when this happens (approx 2 times a month) I send them a post card to the address on the payment envelope telling them I recieved their payment of xxx dollars, but they did not not tell me what the payment was for and please email me at xxxxxxxxx and let me know what payment was for and I will get it right out. It usually works very well.

Thanks for all the great ideas, everybody. I ended up doing what debbielennon said...I hated to have to get all sorts of information on the people that it wasn't for, but I had to in order to find the guy...maybe he's out of town?
